Hi peoples.. Well I can now talk with the R1200R in house. Got it today....man its stops quickly. . Quizzed the sales/service guys to death about running in the engine (as per BMW or hit it hard) ... took the BMW option which they strongly supported. ... Now to get serious re accessories without needing to sell a kidney.
BTW ,This forum really helped getting me onto the learning curve. [ Now ,get it shipped to US and do the Rockies what do you reckon? Whats the best state to ride in?? Please dont argue too much hehehe] Back in a sec...just have to go outside and check it again.

Welcome to the Ride !

Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, all good. If limited time, Southeast Colorado (Durango-Silverton) and northward is great. Southwest of there, Arizona into the Grand Canyon is a great ride. Dont miss the north rim... way less crowded in the summer, and beautiful. It is all good. Sturgis is ok, but cannot compete with the views in the Southwest USA.

Your RR is the perfect ride for the mountains.

If you camp I would suggest the 'Top of the Rockies' rally in Paonia, Co (Mid July) and the Beemer Rally in Spearfish,SD (just West of Sturgis) usually the beginning of July. IMHO The Sturgis rally is a see and be seen type event and not worth the ride up from Colorado, better to see the sights when the 'Bikers' are somewhere else.
I don't know if you have been to the States before but if it's your first trip don't forget that things are far apart. I had some German friends come over and expect to see the whole country in a little less than a month. They arrived in New York and never got west of the Mississippi.

If you decide to come to California, look me up. The north coast is stunning. Death Valley in southern CA is also worth while. There are so many good rides around here is is ridiculous. That being said, there are too many people here so some of the more desirable places to visit like Yosemite (yeah we got that too) are so crowded you go there to see it, not so much for the riding pleasure.

Any National Park is a must see from a sight seeing perspective. All the other suggestions are great too.

As for states to ride... if you want very tight twisty roads and rolling hills, try Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia... but none of the states east of the Mississippi have the extreme, diverse natural beauty found out west... not even close.
In my order of favorites : Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, (Northern)California, Oregon, Montana, Arizona, Texas....
You can look at my site and see photo's from every state listed and then some - taken in the last year or so from my bike trips.....
Where you should ride really depends on what time of year you're coming and what your looking for,
If you want to stand around looking at chromed out bikes, and party with a bunch of Harley Davidson leather vest/buttless chap wearing folk, by all means go to Sturgis...
Best natural beauty and long miles out west.
If you don't want to ride 1000's+ of miles, maybe visit more U.S. cities, then stay out east and enjoy the Smokey Hills and the nice twisty roads.
The south east and mid west are less than desirable if you have a choice...
I wouldn't travel around the world to stand about at any motorcycle rally, but that's just me, I prefer to ride more than stand around talking about riding... And on that note, the suns up and I'm going to load up and go ride the Pacific Coast Highway right now, see ya!

East vs West riding
I found that East of the Mississippi you can just about draw a straight line between where your at and where you want to go and find interesting back roads to get you there. Out West there are fewer roads (even dirt) and going to a place that is 200 miles away sometimes requires a 400 mile trip.

It really is all about what time of year that your going to come here and ride. California can be really good and has lots of variety year-round.

If you're riding PCH today, at least towards the southern end, you better not describe the warm (80F) breezes and the comfort of summer riding gear to all the guys in the Northeast, they won't even believe it!

Natchez Trace Parkway, 444 miles of scenic wetlands to rolling hills of TN.There are probably a few miles to ride in the south, but if you prefer the desert brown type of scenery you should probably stay west.

As an old fart I have ridden everywhere in North America and Europe and not a little in the Orient. And the best place to ride is right or left out of your driveway and follow your nose. Meaning, where you live and ride all the time is the best place of all for you to ride. Ride often, have fun, and tell us all about it.

BTW, two of my favorite rides are the Blue Ridge Parkway and the North Cascades Highway.

Ah ah ! That's exactly what I am saying to myself 50 times a day while riding...this combination of Power/Handling and brakes efficiency is pure pleasure but a challenge too.

There is a few Carpool lanes in Los Angeles that are very very nice and if you push riding from Los Angeles toward Orange County and Laguna beach you'll discover some huge and wide freeways flat as Greek marble ! So cool ! when the bike is break in.

But for sure PCH, LA crest Highway, Malibu and Santa Monica canyon are really cool... just don't forget that LA crest Highway for example is also to me an "Unlimited Occupancy Riders Cemetery." (3 guys I knew disappears last years)

Absolutely every weeks and week ends many folks depart the planet from their.

SO ! BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS or wake up early and ride to a track...
