Power Commander available? stupid? comments please...

Post by redline999 »

I'm just thinking...I heard from a friend about the tremendous increases in performance and mileage, plus you get to dingle around with the settings on your laptop. sounds like fun, but I'm sure he was bragging some, too. Are there any other easy upgrades to the Rockster? I'm curious, relatively mechanicallay inclined, and willing. I'd love to hear what folks have to say... spare me the flame, I'm just looking to hear other BMW opinions. Do they even make such a device for the Rock?

I had a Power Commander PCIIIUSB installed on the RC51 that I just sold. It was a beast with it installed. Yes, you can connect it via USB to a laptop and get real time RPM/Fuel info. The coolest thing about the P.C. is that you can change the fuel delivery for each RPM and at each different throttle positions.

So you can change the mix for, say 2500rpm, and then set that RPM to have a different fuel delivery at 1/4 throttle, 1/3 throttle, 1/2 throttle, etc. So you can infinitely adjust the system to get it where you want. I used my SAE certified ass-dyno to test and it was quiet a difference! I'm gonna miss the punch that the RC had but I love my R1150R! If you put a dyno jet on it let me know how it works out....definitely worth the upgrade if you have the bones for it.

Yes, there's a PCIII for the Rockster/R1150R. I've had it in mine for a while now. Not too hard to install. The unit ends up in the tail. You can tune it for either performance or mileage but not both. Go faster and accelerate harder require more gas. And no, playing with it on the computer doesn't work that well. You can use somebody else's map for their bike to a degree but every motorcycle is different and should be tuned individually. Couple the PCIII with a decent exhaust setup, a good air filter like BMC or K&N and maybe a Wunderlich air intake and you'll gain a few horses at the top end. The best part about the PCIII is that you can tune the bike so that it doesn't run so lean and get a nice fat mid-range out of your power curve.
