1997r1100rs

Post by bigsur52 »

I am thinking of ourchasing a 1997 1100rs with about 10k milles. It has not had a major service in quite some time, and is used infrequently. would a major 12k service do the trick, plus new battery and tires? Can the ABs be disabled onthis model? Thaks for your input.

Yes the service will do. No the ABS cannot be disabled (but why do you want to disable the ABS?).

I bought a 2000 R1100R with 6700 miles that was stored for 3 years and infrequently ridden before it was stored. I did a full 6k tune up (TBS, Valve adjust, engine oil and filter change) with new tranny and FD fluids (75w140 Mobil1 Tranny and 75w90 Mobil1 FD) and also replaced the air filter, battery, tyres and alternator belt (I used the new Dayco Polycog belt). I also did a full fluid change/brake bleed on the ABS system, which is an easy job.Especially when compared to the iABS on my 2003 R1150RT!!!

A couple of "head ups" for you :
You may experience starter issues on your bike as early Valeo starters (pre-2001) suffered from detached magnets due to poor bonding. The failure can make it appear that your battery is at fault/undercharged. A new starter is around $200 and is easy to R&R.

Hall Effect Sensor failures are another issue. If you experience the motor shutting down, then firing up again and, concurrently, your rpm's are dancing around, this is typical of a bad HES.
Sometimes it will restart when cooled down, run well and then go kerplooey again.
The wiring behind the HES is prone to heat failure and, occasionally, one of the sensors can also fail. In my case, it was a combo of the two. A new HES is around $200 and is also a DIY job which is well document and only requires a couple of tools which you can easily make yourself.

Hi Phil,

I doubt that a bike that has 10k miles on the clock does have all the faults as described by you. I firmly believe a service + change of the fluids and tires will do the job and the bike will run as new ...

Oliver,
My 2000 R1100R only had 10400 miles on it when my HES went out. The Valeo starter failed at 9400 miles. I was not suggesting that he replace them, only that he should be aware of the issues/problems that could occur with the 1100 motors of that age.

Yes, a good service including trans, FD and brakes is a great start.
However, alternator belts, like all rubber items, decay with age which is why I suggested he change it while he is thoroughly servicing the the bike and has tank and the tupperware off, rather than it happen on the road.

I am not berating BMW's as my 2003 R1150RT, which I have owned from new in October of 2002 and with 27k miles on it, has been flawless with zero problems.

I have my R1100R since 1999 and it has 60k km on the clock. Until last week it had the first alternator belt (it is suggested to change at 60k km) and I have never had any problems with the starter, generator or any other piece. What you have experienced seems pretty rare ...
