Valves and spark plugs

Post by zeke »

What is the deal with removing the spark plugs and doing a valve adjustment. I have heard that can be bad? Something about debris....?
My plan was to remove the spark plugs before taking off the head covers, and then install new ones before I put the covers back on. Should I leave the plugs in until I have reinstalled the head covers? Thanks, -Zeke

One of the posts says that carbon will get between the valve and the valve seat when you remove the plugs and give you an inaccurate valve clearance reading. I have felt of carbon and I am familar with valve springs and I feel that it would just be crushed. But for my last adjustment I played it safe and replaced the plugs afterwards.

Leave them in -- it is one less potential problem. Also, blow compressed air in the recess around the spark plug after you pull the wires off, but before you remove the valve cover.
