Rev Limiter

Post by gbagen »

On my bike for the first time. Hit the rev limiter and it was scary. I've hit it on many bikes and just had the power fall off. This was a sudden violent jolt. Unfortunately, with the jolt, Ithe throttle was backed off and then hit the limiter again. I was all over the road in the middle of a pass. Anyone else experienced this?

No jolt here, just a loss of power. Sort of felt like my normal backing off the throttle as I pull in the clutch to shift: just momentary and I shifted.

What gear were you in? Perhaps that could make a difference in that the lower gear the more abrupt the lack of acceleration would be perceived. I've hit the limiter in no gear lower than 4th and didn't have any trouble controlling the sensation.

If your experiences were in a gear higher than 2nd, then it might be worth a trip to your dealer.

Just a thought: were you almost out of gas? That's how mine behaves when I downshift twice and nail it, if the tank is almost empty. The first time it happened I did think it was the rev limiter, but it happened again and again with an empty tank, and now it's my signal to hit the very first gas station. Today, for instance, as the tripmeter went past 250 miles I did a full-throttle test just before each off-ramp with a station. When I got the violent "cut out, cut in, cut out again" action I pulled off and it took 6.09 gallons. She was running on fumes!

Yeah, Mike - I've had that same experience and it WAS violent.

I'll bet you've hit the nail on the head.

Mine happened when gunning out of an intersection with a stop-sign runner headed toward my right leg. The bike just abruptly quit and, after tossing the inertia of my body forward, just as abruptly started up again, causing me to lurch backward in the saddle. Just thankful I made it out of the way. I didn't even have time to be embarrassed at all the lurching!

I can imagine that if it had happened at highway speeds, I would have had some fighting to do to stay in control.

My take-home lesson: by mile 200 on the trip meter, the fuel nozzle is in the gas tank, dispensing more go juice.

I had plenty of gas, but the descriptions you guys gave was exactly what I experienced. I dropped a gear and pulled out to pass when I was thrown around. I thought I had a blow-out at first. I'm really new to the machine, and I know I hit the limiter. I'm going to do it on purpose next time out and se how it acts.

Apologize this innocent question but I was reading you guys and wondered What was the goal in hitting the rev limiter ?

I am at 12K now and I think I went in the red maybe twice for 2 seconds max and really with the tip of my toe.

However I try to move the rev a lot everywhere before the red zone.

So ! finally what is the goal in hitting the rev limiter ?

It's less of a goal and more of a brain fart.

What do you mean by "brain fart" sorry but American English is not my native language neither English by the way.... I know "brain" and I know "fart" but what mean the "brain fart" expression really ? ... and mostly I still don't understand if there is a good reason for the "R" engine to hit the Rev limit ?

Is it good for the engine to do it sometimes ? or what ?

Hmmm... I can't really say I'd ever need to redline this bike (maybe avoiding a red-light runner I suppose). I'm still not taking it over 5000-5500 rpm yet (not done breaking in for awhile), and that accelleration is enough to leave pinch marks on my seat most of the time, and threaten the status of my license.

I tend to avoid redline as a rule, on the street it makes no sense to me. Simply not neccessary when I can leave pretty much anything behind without exceeding 5000rpm, and hard on parts too; racing is a different story, obviously.

IMHO of course.

ps. no need to agonize over your english FredeR1200Ric, it's very good, especially considering English is the most f**cked up language on the planet. I'm glad I'll never have to learn it!

"Brain fart" is an idiomatic expression for a momentary lapse of concentration.

Hummm !

Ok ! Thank you :) its getting a bit better with the "brain fart" thing now...
but what is the link with the fact that a rider push the "R" to the rev limit ?

not trying to play dummy... believe it...just wonder why pushing the bike so high...

Unless one is on the race track, it's probably not a goal, but rather more of an unplanned occurrence.

When I took my first long trip on my bike, I wasn't quite sure of its passing capabilities and, when passing a logging truck on a two-lane highway in Oregon, I became somewhat worried. I kicked it down into 4th gear and twisted the throttle. I got around the truck plenty fast, and in so doing, felt the limiter kick in . At the time I had my eyes on the road and not on the tachometer. I was thankful that the limiter worked so well, for it was a much better sensation than seeing connecting rods shoot out through the engine case!

I also agree that it's a good idea, if one wants to ride one's bike a long time, to stay away from the red line. I believe it was Aldous Huxley that said that modern man has managed to add only one sin to the classic seven deadly sins: The sin of acceleration. And every once in a great while, I need that cheap thrill, although I've never experienced it as magnetizing anyone's genitals. :)

Hey! Frede, the original post indicates while downshifting and making a full on pass the bike bounced against the rev limiter.

It won't hurt the bike to hit the rev limiter as it is there to do just that, limit the revs prior to possible damage. You do experience the engine shutting down as described so there is nothing gained to try and repeatedly run the engine to this speed.

I used my r at a recent track school and routinely hit the limiter in second and third gear the first few sessions. This thing flies, but my shift points on the track had to be reprogrammed in my mind from using a different bike prior. No harm done and a quick glance showed it was at approximately 95 MPH for third gear. These things are too sweet, but an HP being ridden very well spanked me with nary a thought =D> Take care of her needs and then ride it like you stole it! They made these things to run.

I hit the rev limiter more often than i'd like to admit but never experienced anything close to a loss of control. It's just a subtle loss of power that reminds me i need to gear up or roll off the throttle.

How does it happen? Most times i've hit it has been in 2nd gear in the city often to pass or move to another lane on a highway/interchange type thing.

Why do it? Because the eyes are on the road and the engine is so smooth i think i have another 1k rpm of headroom when... i don't.

I have rarely revved mine over 6k, although I regularly shift between 5-5.5k.

I worry now that with 30k miles it's too late to rev it harder, having never really done it previously. :?

Yeah, with 30K, it's for sure time to trade it in on a new one... just a bucket of bolts by now... I could take it off your hands for cheap :D

My engine didn't really feel loosened up nicely until I hit 18K. To paraphrase an above post, these engines aren't built to be babied. Personally, I wouldn't worry about high rev damage until after somewhere north of 100K, assuming the use of proper lubricants at specified intervals. Your revs may vary.

Hi,

I have exactly the same experience.
When the tank is almost empty (after 200 miles); and when i nail it (in 2nd or 3th) the rev limiter (what i think it is) is active at 5500 RPM! normaly the Rev limiter is active at 8000 RPM.
This is anoying! Could someone please tell me why the bike react like this because there should be enough gas in the tank for at least 30 miles.

it always happend;
-when there is less fuel in the tank (about 20-30 miles to go)
- with full throttle
- in 2nd or 3th

is it normal?

thanks for the reply!
