After I awoke from sticker-shock coma - my starter's on the way out; quote is $401 plus labour - I went pronto on this board. Which came to the rescue, as often before. Thanks for your starter replacement recommendations, and to Cyclerob for his post of how not to remove it (namely hot).
It seems several of you have bought starters from EuroMotoelectrics.com - how are your starters doing, and how many miles are they use in by now? I assume that that is the preferred route over rebuilding it?
TIA!

So far so good. My mech had installed quite a few from Euro. The Valeo is made in Poland, but according to my mech is better than Borsch. Shipping was swift.

BeemerBoneyard has the Valeo for $205, new. I seem to remember that either DSKYZD or Boxer sourced one less expensively.......but my mind wonders at times.

Thanks! Euromoto has them for $189 on their site, and a quick web search didn't reveal any better price than that.

I had mine rebuilt by a local reputable alternator/starter rebuild place for $135. The brush supports broke after just a couple weeks, but they made good on it and redid the job better at no cost. So far so good.

Had excellent service from him. He has a Valeo starter special on Ebay with BMW plugs and a filter.....

Re: Experience w/ starters from EuroMotoElectrics?
I did a EuroMotoElectrics starter for my 04 RR last december (the one in 2007, that is), pretty sure for the same price they show now---$189. Seemed like a one man shop. Anyway the guy I talked to was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable; the price was right; the shipping was fast and inexpensive (free?). Things are working great. Changing out the starter is really an easy job if you pay attention to things like disconnecting the battery, etc. I'd do it again.
I keep meaning to clean up my old starter, and maybe drop it by the local shop for an estimate (if it needs rebuilding, seems they might sometimes just get dirty (?)). So many roads, so little time…

Plug for EuroMotoElectrics: Excellent! S/h included in $189, fast, friendly, with instructions and a ballpoint pen
I exchanged the starter hot (I know, but a) I was cautious and b) I did sleep in a Holiday Inn the night before) and couldn't be happier with them.
