Tail bags...low profile,clean looking tail bag

I'm looking for photos and comments regarding tail bags. There is the Axio hard shell and a Chase Harper, Stealth clam shell tank bag that has caught my eye...a year or more ago there was a photo posted showing such...can't find it? I intend to place the bag on the rear portion of the seat, very seldom rire two up...your help would be appreciated.

I have a brand new Axio tail-bag that I'd sell. I'm not gonna use it since my seat as modified by Sargent has a longer rider section and shorter passenger section, plus my Kwikover gets in the way. It fits on the stock bike with the stock seat just fine, and the hard shell is a nice feature. It also appears to be very water resistant. Bought it, brought it home, tried it on - didn't fit my bike like it did the R12R in the showroom, so it's up for grabs. Make an offer if you're interested.

I have a Cortech Tailpack. Like Don this fit the stock seat better than the Corbin, because front section is 2" longer than stock. Came from a former bike,doesn't get much use because the stock bags on the Beemer are big enough if I'm moteling it. If I'm camping the tent and stuff is strapped across the passenger section. Took a few quick pics (didn't fuss with focus).

After loosing a pair of shoes out of my usual bag i picked up a Kriega US20. I wanted something that would hold a laptop + junk and come off the bike easily. I also need something that will carry around as it isn't just for touring. It has a secure four-point mounting system.

Converts to a courier bag:


I have the BMW rack, but i've also mounted it on the back seat. Fit's okay.


You can permantly attach the straps, loop them under the seat, or i usually just tie them until i've decided where the permanent home will be.

Is that rack compatible with the factory bag mounts? Looks like it is... did you get it after the fact, & if so how much did it cost you? I guess I could search, but I DON'T WANNA!

Since you mentioned the Chase Harper clamshell tankbag, maybe the item you are looking for is the Ztechnik storage pod. It is made by Chase Harper, but has a somewhat different shape and doesn't have their name on it. I picked one up for my RR since I don't like big tank bags. I never ride 2 up on that bike, so I have a small Moto Fizz tank bag I got at Aerostich, and then have the Ztechnik storage pod for when I need a little more space. Nice item and I think fits the bikes looks

Is that rack compatible with the factory bag mounts? Looks like it is... did you get it after the fact, & if so how much did it cost you?

It's a factory BMW rack that works perfect with the BMW luggage. I think it's part #71607699528 and I paid $250 at Pacific Yamaha/BMW. It isn't the sexiest addition to the R1200R, but it sure is useful! I strap all kinds of things to it on a daily basis. I can't imagine a daily rider without one.

I think I need that. Although, I did fit my work stuff and 10 lb of blueberries in my tank bag last spring - it's pretty big when expanded!

You wouldn't happen to have pictures of the Kriega US-20 mounted on the pillion instead of the rack, would you? Also, when you you say it fits okay, do you mean it fits just okay, or does it fit well? I plan to mount mine over the passenger pillion. Thanks a bunch for any advice.

One of these days I am going to buy some soft paniers for when I can manage less packing space and want to save the weight of the stock hard cases.

I like it, it's a stock Corbin seat for the R1200R. The kick up in the seat is two inches further back than the stock seat which caused me to install a set of bar backs. I thought that would make the bike feel strange in corners but It's alright. The only issue I had was having to put washers under the seat latch but think they could come out now that the seat has settled in. No quality issues, the seat is heavy but I see that as a good thing, I couldn't see putting money in the stock seat pan. One positive effect of the set back in the seat is my legs (30" inseam) seem more comfortable.

That's the way I've gone with my RR. I even passed up a set of factory hard bags for sale here in Chicago for the seriously low price of $ 395. I've got an 1100GS with hard bags and luggage rack when I need to take alot of stuff. For the RR, I went with a set of Fieldsheer soft bags. Since I wear a riding suit when I ride, I don't need to carry alot of clothing. We did a 2 day weekend trip up to western Wisconsin right after I bought the RR and I had more than enough room packing wise. If need be, I have a BMW waterproof duffel I could strap on the bike for alot of extra capacity. I put the luggage mounts on the bike so I would have a place to attach ROK straps and to hold the luggage and duffel away from the painted surfaces. I'm finding as I get older, less is better. Lighter is ever better than that.

For longer trips, I got this one in yellow for my F800GS when I don't want my Jesse's on, but I already tried it and it fits nicely on the R12R and comes in Black. No hard luggage required.

It sits on the back of the seat and attaches easily with straps, holds 50 litres.

If that's too big there is always the BMW 19 Litre bag, which is now available in a newer model than this photo that keeps its shape. This one tends to sag.

There are some 'strap keepers' to secure the straps when the bag is not in use so you don't have to remove the seat every time. This gentleman has a good review:

I think it comes down to what you want the bag for. The Kriega is awesome if you want to be able to take the bag off and run around town. It's light weight, shrinks to the size of the contents, and fits well when worn courier style over the shoulder. It's also 100% waterproof. If it'll be used mostly for rally rendezvous and summer swings you might want something a bit more 'permanent'. Personally, i'm very happy with the purchase, and I haven't lost any shoes with it.

I carry an Airhawk tire inflator, my maps and my SPOT unit in it.. other odds and ends get tucked in once in a while (like bottled water..)

Nice part about it is it comes off super easily. It has a base that is fastened with two velcro straps under the seat. The actual bag then attaches to the base with a really ingenious looped velcro fastening system that's strong and super easy to use. You can have the bag off in about 15 seconds and use the supplied strap to use it as a man-purse. Reinstalling it takes about the same time.

I think they also may make one that expands taller than this one..

Oh - the bag behind it is my Kwikover - which is used all the time to protect the bike from prying eyes and the bags from sun attack..
