Yuasa maintenance free on r1150r
Since my beak was going in for abs brake and clutch bleed service 2 days ago, I decided to change my 4 year old Yuasa lead acid 51913 battery while the tank was off. Since i was getting tired of lifting the tank to refill the battery quartery, I said enough is enough, time for the BMW gel type. Got a shock when I was quoted the equivalent of your $385 by our local BMW dealer
. So went around with my 8 year old original BMW Exide lead acid battery looking for a cheaper equivalent. Closest I could find dimensions and spec wise that was maintenance free was the Yuasa YTX20LBS which was only $130. So I did some trial fitting first and saw that the battery tray just needed to be widened 1/4 inch, a couple of minutes gingerly bending it with bent pliers and it fit like a charm. Next was the bike terminal negative connector, had to punch out the welded bolt and bent the terminal end so it would align with the Yuasa negative terminal. The positive went in with no problem. Wish I could post some pics but don't know how. Anyways, after we had confirmed evrything would fit with no clearance issues, we proceeded to activate it. We started by peeling off the foil seal, popping in the battery solution on top which looks kinda cool as it pours in on its own, installed the battery seal plug, and stuck on my battery tender jr til the light went green. I even tried inverting the whole battery upside down to see how well the seal works
.Finally, we strapped in the Yuasa and left the battery breather tube unused and coiled under the battery tray. Don't you just love it when you get to save a few bucks?

Glad that it worked for you, I like the Yuasa AGM, it has given me good service. There are others that can be had from $70 to $130, sometimes with free shipping. I have enclosed a link of the one I have used in the past.

Thanks for the link Boxermania. You guys are so lucky that you can get the Yuasa agm for only $88 with shipping. But here in Philippines, $130 is already considered cheap for a motorcycle battery from a reputable brand. Must be the shipping, taxes, and corrupt customs

Wow, how'd you score a BMWR1150R in the Philippines? I live in FL and I don't think I've even seen another one on the road or at bike rallies.

I got my black beak with black engine option from a grey market seller back in 2002, he sold qite a lot of BMW bikes here, quite the whole range. Problem was there was nobody to service them nor any warranty. So just changed engine oil, oil filter, tranny oil, diff oil, valve job myself. Was praying nothing major would go wrong like the servo abs or motronic, and luckily my prayers were answered. Couple of years later, BMW Philippines opened here, along with their service department, so actually my first "real service" was just performed then. Now the place is swarming with Beemers of all models, sizes & colors. Just saw the latest R800R the other day, looks like a baby K12R but with the F800 engine.

You live on the wrong side of FL.
Take a ride to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. At least few R's at the Holiday Park every Sunday.
Also, you are welcome to stop at Miami Beach any time. I got 2 of them.

Re: Yuasa maintenance free on r1150r
Something just came to mind, since the Yuasa YTX20L-BS that I installed is an AGM type, can I still use my Battery Tender Jr. with it? Or do AGM batteries require a specific trickle charger?
Thanks!
Alfie

Great tip on the Yuasa YTX20LBS, Lean Angle. I'm in the Philippines myself, and I'm glad there's a Yuasa option for the ridiculous BMW Exide battery. Now if only there was a way to get Odyssey batteries here.Lean Angle wrote:Thanks for the link Boxermania. You guys are so lucky that you can get the Yuasa agm for only $88 with shipping. PS, I've read on this forum (can't find the link, sorry) that Battery Tender, Jr.'s are perfectly fine for AGMs. Anyway, I've been using mine for about three years now with no problems so far.

Oo, taga Parañaque ako
And yes, I'm Filipino.
Ha ha, anyway, I ride an Edition 80 Rockster (the white ones with the annoyingly cheap looking black stickers/trim: Der Korp didn't even bother to top it off with a clear coat).
See you around, man. You happen to ride with BOSS or Hombres?

Old newbie ako sa BOSS pardner
