Thanks Bill, it's been fun. As for the mirrors, well, we'll get to them in a moment, but yea, I really like the way they look. So,as I promised yesterday, today is the last day of this. UPS man showed around 11:15, I had the bike in position, tools at the ready. Friday is my work out of the house day, so as long as I have my phone at the ready, well, you can figure out the rest. So once I pried the pooches off the UPS man ( they love him ), I took my package to the work bench and opened it up. A quick read of the instructions and 15 minutes later I was left with this

Image

I had sworn up and down that I was done buying noisey exhaust, but my oldest son said the stock can had to go, so who am I to argue ? I picked this up 2 weeks ago used, for 3 months, but needed the proper pipe to canister before I could mount it. Knute at Remus was great and shipped me the correct pipe for virtually nothing. Not wanting the other side of the bike to feel neglected, I had read here somewhere that Mark had one last slider puck for the rear end so I quickly snatched that up a month or so ago. Thanks Mark.

Image

So, what started 4 months ago as a modest re-do of a great bike went a little further. Not necessarily because I had this great plan laid out, more to the fact that browsing the net, parts became available that I felt would work. Kind of like going for a ride with no destination, which I like to do alot. Here's the finished, for now, product.

Image

Oh, a breif ride report on all these changes. First, the shock is perfect. Ran alot of backroads today and the frost heaves were not an issue. The Grip Puppies work much better than expected and will stay on the bike. The mirrors are as good as everyone has said. No vibration and a great view of the rear. Didn't try out the puck :D , but figure it will probably work. And the exhaust. Took the baffle out before installing it so I could hear the worst and it actually sounds great. Deep rich tone but not loud at all. Baffle stays on the shelf. And speaking of the exhaust, the instructions said to ride it 100 miles then re tighten bolts....so I did. In looking for a new helmet, I found an internet store, FlynCycle, that it turned out was about 40 miles or so from the house. Out in the country, metal bldg next to the owners house. So that was my first destination ride on my " new " RR. Really nice folks ...actually let me try out helmets while on my bike ! Can't beat that. Anyhow, I needed a new one since I just sold my Arai Corsair, and ended up riding home in this, and they shipped my System IV home for me for $ 8.00

Image

April 1st is just around the corner, the RR is done, the GS is ready and the Stratolounger is up in the garage. Great start to what I hope is a great riding season. See ya on the road.

If you don't get a hugger, you may want to consider getting a sock for the Ohlins. I believe Ohlins offers some pretty ones in their colors. The grit thrown up by the rear tire can make for a short life for the shock shaft and seal otherwise. I find the hugger works well, but it is a tad expensive.
Sorry Don, missed your post. When I was getting the spring changed out I asked the Ohlins guy about the sock and the little protective plastic thing they sell to help protect it, and he said he had never seen the plastic thing Ohlins sells, and as for the Ohlins, sock, he didn't care for them because more grime builds up in them that you don't see. But a hugger of some sort is in my crosshairs. I am dissapointed Mier or what ever never got back to me. I'll bug 'em now that I am done !

Not surre. I did call Parts ( Danny ) at my dealer yesterday and he looked it up on his computer and then went and measured frames on a GS and RR on the floor. He said that in looking at the part on his computer that there are holes other than the ones on each side that match up to holes in the bottom of the GS. We don't have any holes so we might have to modify the guard and drill some holes to secure it. But he thought it might be doable without too much effort. I'm thinking of calling Maier tomorrow, explain what I'd like to try and see if they will sell me one with the understanding that if I don't think I can make it work, they will let me return it at my costs for shipping. And ya, you're kinda right about the painting thing...it was actually an Etch a Sketch that I did :D

1st one I have seen designed for our bikes - although machineartmoto is now working on a "MudSling" for the R (just got an update from them after posting on the "rear fender" thread (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19803)). I too wondered if the GS fender would work on the R - looking forward to the answer as the Maier is a lot less expensive! I did send a note to the Italian company as it really looks pretty simple to install and covers what is now uncovered.

Cy,

I frequently go right past MachineArtMoto's location on Sunday rides.. I likely could arrange to go past them on a Saturday if they need an R12R to eyeball. There is a great little cafe in Frenchtown that is sort of a destination ride to nowhere for our club.. (makes for a nice 190 mile loop for a Sunday ride..)

Or if you're down this way.. lemme know and we could visit them together. I did talk to them a bit at the MOA rally, seemed friendly nice people.

Thanks Peter. I'm really happy withthe way it has come out. I wanted to keep that petite look ala a Ducati Monster. 'Bout as close as I will come. Had it out yesterday in 41 degree weather without any heated clothes and it was doable, and unless you are running at freeway speeds, wind isn't really an issue. Back to the Maier splash guard, I have spoken with them once today and have a call into their designer to see his thoughts on making it work. The initial response from customer service however was not positive. Seems I am not the first to ask. The one from Italy looks nice, but you are talking probably $ 150 to see it at your house. Ouch !!! And the Machineart one for the 1200 gs is in that price range, which takes me back to Don's initial comments.

In days of old
When riders were bold
And Mudguards weren't invented
They placed a sock
Upon their shock
And ruptures were prevented. :o

Thought I would follow up here on my attempt to find out whether the Maier hugger would work on our bikes. I called there twice ( 1-800-33MAIER ) and the young man on the phone said he did not think it would work, but directed me to Bob, the head designer for their plastic parts....he's at ex 206 I beleive. After leaving him 2 voicemails, he has not returned my calls in a week now, so I have more or less given up. If Machineart were to make one for the RR, I would go with that over that one from Italy only because the price would probably be about the same and the Machinart one looks more substantial. As for me, my hunt is over .....I managed to snctch up the one in the classifieds from NIppy Norman's ( who would name their kid Nippy, or better yet, who would call themselves Nippy ) yesterday and it will be here Monday or Tuesday. I was this close to buying a sock for my shock yesterday, after finding one at my local Honda dealer.

Thanks Allan. If you mean at 70 or 80, yea it does. Not sure if I've had it higher than that since I got it last fall. Here is al link to one for sale, today, on Adventure Rider. Looks like he might have modified it somewhat so it does not sit on the tank. I was going to buy it, but I'm not sure if the tank mount thing will work on our bikes. I tried cross checking on the Big Mak site, but he doesn't have a chart on there anymore, and Gyclegadgets doesn't carry them anymore.

Well, all right, I guess I have to agree. But it wasn't because I was looking to find a way to spend more money, it just sorta found my wallet. I had pretty much given up hope of finding a cheap Carbon Fiber hugger and none of the manufacturers like Maier or Machinart were making a inexpensive hugger for our bikes so I was this close to buying a sock for my shock and calling it a day...until I stopped in the classifieds last week. A Nippy Norman's hugger in excellent condition for $ 110. How could I pass, or, how could I be so lucky it was still available after 5 hours of being posted. It arrived 2 days later, had the bracket powdercoated black and installed it today.

Image

I'm happy. Carbon Fiber it isn't, but $ 350 it wasn't. :D

Re: It's been a long, expensive winter..........For Sale ?????

I am seriously considering putting the R up for sale, hence the question marks. Not 100 % sure ....yet. Nothing wrong with the bike, I just don't ride like I used to. I have my GS, which I just took on a quick 2,000 mile jaunt, and I have my Yamaha Statolounger. The R for the most part has sat since I finished it last spring. Currently just turned 6,000 miles and will have that service done at my dealer. I have not sharred this here before, since I am somewhat a private person and the fact that I don't really know any one here, but I traded for the R jsut after I lost my 23 year old son last fall. It kept my mind off him last winter as played with the bike setting it up. I have not ridden much this year, taking up golf and keeping myself busy keeping my job. And at 59, well, it might be time to move on to something else. I just know I don't need 3 bikes right now. I just thought I 'd post it up here in case someone here might have some interest. It's a wonderfull bike set up to the 9's in showroom condition. Everything in the post will go with it, along with the stock exhaust and I can help shi[ it since I've shipped several over the years with no hitches. Any interest, contact me here. And thanks.

Stunning bike Mike, wish I was in the market (and in your neighbourhood), I 'd buy it for sure.
So very sorry to hear about your son. Appreciate you sharing that tragic and very personal information. I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to you and your family.
Trust the R12 project, you did so splendidly, helped in some way take your mind off your tragic loss. It certainly is an impressive result. Your son would be proud, I am sure.

Hello Gezerbike:

How long ago did you buy the Motofizz tankbag model Through Concept? They have a model Concept and it seems to be different from the one shown by you way back in March. Thks in advance for your reply.

I think I bought the bag sometime around January or February. I just checked the Aerostich site and it seems to be the same bag to me, so I am not sure what you are looking at. Ron, thank you for the kind remarks. Ii was, as always is, alot of fun farkling a new bike, especially when you start with a nice platform. And I try never to go cheap when I do it ( just ask my wife ). And I think I did a pretty good job on this one, and so did the prospective buyer, with whom I hope to close a sale on the bike tonight. I have time to get it in for the 6,000 mile service ( $ 300 ) so this is all falling in place, almost too easily. It was a tough call, but I really love my 1100 GS just a little more than the R, and in this economy, putting a little cash back into the bank isn't such a bad thing.
