DIY oil changers

For an oil change with filter. On all my other cars/bikes I simply add the published amount of oil and call it good.
Yesterday I changed the oil and added the 4 liters max as called for in the owners / service manual. The oil level in the sight glass is clear up to the top of it after starting it up for a short while (to fill the filter) and shutting it down. The oil is not up to temp yet which will cause it to rise a little more. This makes me uncomfortable so I'll probably end up draining some off and checking it hot and adding any if needed. Next time I'll probably add 3.5 and check it from there.

On a good note; when I did my 600 mi final drive lube change I was alarmed by how bad the lube looked, black and metallic. I decided to change it again with this oil change to rinse this stuff out. It looked MUCH better this time.

I'm a new R12R owner and recently changed the oil for the first time (my first time, not the bike's) and had the exact same experience. I used 4l total, although I did pour some oil in the oil filter (new filter with change). I ended up draining a bit of oil out.

I'll be interested in hearing from experienced owners.

My advice - forgeddaboutit. I've been dumping the 4 quarts (we get oil in quarts in the US, not liters) in for the past 42,000 miles and have had no leaks, oil related problem or any other engine problems.

People are WAY too anal about what is about 200cc's of oil. Look at a diagram of an R1200R engine, and you'll see the sump is way deeper then the top of the oil window, and there aren't any spinning components within about 2" of the oil if the top is at the top of the window.
