2011 R1200R's?

Post by Mr Breeze »

Has anyone seen the 2011's hit their dealer floor yet? (or in the warehouse in NJ) I'm hearing different things with regard to timing of availability. Been considering a new '09 or '10, but with the 2011's coming, I'm not sure if I should wait.

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome Bill.
I've been lurking for a while and decided to join. I've had a couple K1200LT's and now waiting on my K1600GTL to be built. Have always wanted a light, nimble bike like the R1200R to complement the touring bike, so now I'm getting serious about it. There are a few 2010 "touring" models still on dealer showrooms (sans ABS) for a decent price (low to mid $13k) but really don't need the bags with the K1600 coming.

Don't know if the new engine in the 2011's will be worth the wait and extra cost than what I can get a 2010 for.

You seem certain that it is April. I'm guessing some of the dealers I've been talking to are telling me sooner in order to garner a down payment and eventual sale. The weather is fabulous here in AZ this time of year, and I'm looking at June or July before the K1600's arrive, and really want to be riding now! :)

My opinion--get the better deal on an '09 or '10. The '11 is nice, but I just don't see the big improvement to warrant the extra $$$. With the money you save, you can stick it in extras you may need (bags, windshield, cylinder guards, etc.). Think about it from the $$$ side. Not from the salesman's talk. Plus, the older model is proven through and through, and every bug has been worked out.

I'm with him all the way on this.

You can always just sell the bags you don't need off the touring model...

According to my salesman at Bob's BMW in Jessup, Md., the store has a 2011 Classic in the building but won't move it to the showroom until March 1. No word on when ordered bikes arrive. BUT I can only look at, not ride, the 2011:

… "We will not be getting a demonstrator for [the 2011 R1200R]. The theory is that we have a fleet of service loaners R1200R models. Customers will be permitted to test ride those to get a sense of the model design. We have R1200GS and R1200RT Demonstrators that have the new enhanced engine that's now offered in the new R1200R models for customers that want experience the dynamic of the engine. So we have the new model here for you to see and demonstrators to ride to your hearts content. …"

If I want to ride a 2011 R1200R, either the classic or non-classic, at Bob's BMW, I'll have to order one.

Bill,

Sounds like yet another good reason to visit Morton's and deal with Steve Anderson or Jeff Dunkle.. both of them are enthusiasts first..

I can ping them (old friends) and find out what their R12R status is..

BTW - are you going to be at the Morton's Spring Fling? John M and I are going..

Well, I decided not to wait for the 2011's. Found a brand new '09 with ABS, BC, heated grips, center stand and white signals for about $100 over the dealers cost out at a dealership in SoCal.

Looking forward to it!

OMG!! Really? Jeff Dunkle is the most pompous ass I've ever encountered in a motorcycle dealership! He's the reason I AVOID Morton's. The last time I saw him, in 2007, I had my checkbook and the title to my K75S in my pocket. He made such a lousy impression on me that I left, and bought my R12R a week later from a dealer in New Hampshire over eBay.

Double check everything Jeff tells you. He'll quote chapter and verse about BMW models and MOST OF IT IS WRONG!

Enthusiast?!? Sheesh!
