Tire Pressure Indicators

Post by MJB »

I have a 2007 R
Did a big raid last summer, about 11,000km
Changed my tires in Las Vegas at the BMW dealership
A few days later noticed that the tire pressure indicator; left side of the computer, which I believe reads the front tire: would not come up
After about 1/2 hour of riding the yellow warning light came on to say low air pressure.
So I stopped and checked, all fine

This kept happening all the way home to Toronto.
Took the bike to the dealer for the 40,000km service, and told them about the problem
I left the bike in the shop for the week, but they could not find out what was wrong, even after installed new sensors in the tires.
Took the bike out and went ridding, to finish off the season.

Now the bike is back in the BWM shop.
They have swapped out the sensors again, but still the computer will not read the sensors
Now they are telling me it is a computer problem, and the Germany is looking into it.
The tires are fine. They hold air
This is a nuisance item. Don't want the yellow light to keep coming on

Everything is under warranty, so I'm ok there

My 2 questions are:

1. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so do you know how they solved the problem.
2. I might have them take out the sensors altogether if they cannot solve the problem. End up with no TPS. Anyone done this

Thanks for your help

MJB. I had a similar issue on my F800ST, which I believe is the same monitor system. One dealer looked at it several times and said 'It must be the computer because the sensors test fine'. Went on a 10,000 mile trip out west with that stupid light going on most of the time. When I got back home, I tried another dealer. They swapped out the rear sensor and all was good. It does appear that the computer code reader/service tool doesn't do a great job of identifying problems in this system. Good luck with getting it fixed!

I did like the security of a working tire pressure monitor, but the used 1200R I got doesn't have it installed. Kind of mis it, but my pressure gauge is pretty reliable. :D

I took the sensors out of an F800S since I wanted to run lower pressure and didn't want to look at the light all of the time. I just took out the sensors during a tire change and put a "tiny" piece of velcro over the light so I couldn't see it anymore (tape was too thin). Never had a problem.
