Foot peg that wont leave me be...
I guess I'm inviting speculation here because the problem seems too weird for anyone to have actually had it. The warning pin in one of my foot pegs was snapped off by the PO, broken inside the peg. I've drilled it for an easy-out and purchased a replacement with threads coated in blue - Loctite blue, I'm thinking. The peg is still on the bike which seems like as good a place as any for fixing it. Heat will be needed for soften the Loctite, over 300 degrees apparently. That seems likely to toast the paint on the aluminum, either by heat or propane. I haven't thought of a way to focus enough heat specifically on the broken bit without damaging the alloy threads. Am I missing anything here? Thoughts?

If you heat only the steel remnant, it will expand and bind itself to the aluminum of the footpeg. If you heat he entire footpeg, perhaps in an oven to beyond 300 degrees the aluminum will expand at a greater rate than the steel and you will have a better chance of removing the part. I would also consider holding it in a vice with some cardboard to protect it and heating it with a heat gun. You could use a laser thermometer to see what temperature you have achieved

blue loctite is not the one that needs heating. That would be the red flavor.

Broke mine off the same way and got it out the same way. Gripped in a vise with rubber pads, drilled the center of the pin to use a screw extractor to unscrew it after I got it plenty hot with 1200watt heat gun. Took about 10 mins of heating before it would budge if I remember. NO paint damage!
Going to try not to break off any more of them though!

Sounds like they are talking about the "feeler/bumper" on the bottom of the pegs.riceburner wrote:which pin is this?

Why not, the "feeler/bumper". Happily for me, just as I had drilled out the threads and was about to pull the peg from the bike to heat it and proceed, the weather took a turn for the better and I went riding. I will get to it though - eventually. Eliot was right calling April the cruelest month. The riding is so near!

Don't know why I sweated this job. About five minutes with a heat gun and an easy-out brought the plug right out. Maybe memories of trying to extract snapped off exhaust bolts.... Now for some dry, warm roads so I can get that foot peg a little closer to the ground.

I've snapped both of mine off in turns. It's just like the chicken stripes--enjoy!!
