I'm new to the forum so first off......hello everyone.
I don't currently own an R1200R but it's on my short list for my next bike. Hope to decide in the
next month or so. I joined to forum so I could read through all the topics and get the inside info.
on what seems to be a great bike. I may post a few questions for all of you "experienced" R12R owners
but for now I'll just "lurk" and read.

Take an R1200R for a test ride. Go on really, it won't hurt.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects handlebars to the saddle.

I have owned a 1/2 dozen bikes or so in the last 25 years, and ridden at least 20 different kinds. The R1200R will do anything pretty well, from spirited sport riding to mild off-roading, to touring. I have done all of these things and I've fallen in love with this machine (2009 with ABS/ESA). Last fall I rode to Big Bend National Park with a friend and it was amazing. The bike - and the brand really - endears itself to the owner like nothing else. I'm deep into the 2 year with this bike and I absolutely love it. I have had no experiences of "day-dreaming" about my next bike as this fills every need.

I'm currently riding a 2003 Victory TC Deluxe.
It's a great bike for what it is but I'm getting to the age that I need a more standard riding position.
(Not sure if it's the age or just the back)
I've owned a Triumph Scrambler and Yamaha FZ6 (among others) in the past. I've always liked the more upright riding position
but the Victory filled a need when I bought it.

I've ridden all manner of bikes over the years, including 3 other BMWs: R1100R, R1100S and an F800ST. I'm not a particular lover of BMWs, most of my other bikes have been made up of Hondas - 3 VFRs (750, 800Fi and a V.Tec) & Yamaha (FZS600 Fazer, FZX750 and V.Max) - there's even Been a Harley Dynaglide. The only thing that drew me to the previous BMWs was the seat heights, I like the way BMW do different seat and chassis heights on their models to accommodate us shorter riders. The R1100R even had an adjustable seat which I thought was fantastic. Now as I'm getting older and creakier the low seat issue is quite important to me as I can't cope with tall bikes now like I used to be able to.
That was where the R1200R came into my life. I had the F800 at the time & didn't really want another BMW as I'd read so much about the reliability issues and I felt like I was sitting on a time bomb waiting for it to go off - but when my low chassis R1200 model came up for sale at a BMW dealership (Rainbow) I had to go look at it and try it for size - it fit me like glove and is soooo comfy, I can, and do ride it all day. It's also, very unlike any of my previous BMWs - much more refined and an absolute joy to ride. I thought my Honda VFRs were superb bikes but the R1200 matches - if not exceeds them for pure riding pleasure. It's also a lot lighter than my previous 'R' bikes. I have a friend's Honda CB1300 in my garage at the moment, looking after it for him. Moving it around the place in comparison to the R1200 - it feels like a dead weight. Beautiful bike, but very heavy and again that seat is incredibly high for a little fella.
As far as the reliablity of the R1200 goes, I've had no probs (yet) since I bought it last Sept - but I will at some point I never doubt that, BMW build quality isn't what is once was and there have been many well documented cases of mechanical failures etc. But you have to remember that these are related to what you read on forums where you only ever get to hear of the bad stuff. For every BMW that gives trouble there are many more that never miss a beat which we never hear of. Sure there are the odd ones that seem like they were put together at 5pm on a Friday afternoon - my R1100S was one, dreadful thing - but most are ok now. I'd still get a good warranty with whatever you buy though
