tipped over

Post by c.guenthner »

I have a new 2012 R1200R and recently it tipped over in a parking lot. I was practicing slow manuevering(I know rookie mistake). Anyway, the right cover on the cylinder has small scratches. Do I need to have it repaired? Is there any risk of rust? Also, the "engine" symbol on the display was coming on the first time I restarted the bike. It doesn't come on now so does that mean something was "reset"?

Thanks for the feedback.

I think you'll be fine. You probably just scratched the paint.

You might wanna look into a pair of these though:

The heads can be painted to fix the scratches as well. I will have to hunt down the info. We found it on a GS forum after my bike what tipped over while parked.

You want this paint to touch up the valve cover. BMW Granite Grey.

Unless your valve covers are "Silver"...then I don't know exactly which Silver they are.

I believe they are aluminum, hence no risk for rust. If it were me I'd touch up the area. BMW makes paint sticks. Assuming all R1200Rs have the same color valve covers the number is 71602158300. If not, MAX's part fiche is your friend.

Unless I'm mistaken, and he's talking about scratches on a valve guard (which could be aluminum) he's probably just got scratches in the paint on the valve cover, which is magnesium and won't rust. They are, however, very expensive to replace. I wouldn't worry about scratches, a good valve guard will cover them up anyway, and prevent damage in future drops.

Thanks everyone. The head covers are magnesium and they are just scratches so i'm gonna not worry about replacing them.

Any advice about the engine light on the display, again, it doesn't come on anymore so I'm guessing it's ok.
