What type of screws secure the black plastic surround that funnels the air to the oil cooler? Are they standard cross heads, hex heads or something else?
My bike is about 10 days away and I've just ordered a cooler guard but am not sure what tools I am going to need to fit it. I don't want the fitting of my first farkle hampered by not having the right tools.
The plastic is held by two torx screws. You need a male driver, but I don't remember the size (between 20-30). I also can't remember if the cooler itself is also secured by torx. I am tempted to say it's standard (not Allen) 10mm hex bolts. The Wunderlich guard, for instance, gets attached via all four bolts. If nobody else replies and you need exact numbers I can look at the bike tonight.
Many thanks Harald. There's no rush for an answer since I won't have the bike for a few days yet. I think you've probably given me an answer in that I need a set of Torx bits if I want to do anything on this bike.
If I can be the first..... congrats on the new bike David!
Where are you located?
For torx I have found this kit to allow me to do just about everything on a BMW from removing the wheels to all maintenance and road side repairs that involves torx.(most fasteners on the R). It packs easy under the seat too.
More roadside work on my GS though since my R has been very reliable for many miles...
Of course for mission critical things if you don't have a built in torque sensor in you arm a torque wrench is a good idea. At least with these wrenches there's not too much leverage to get you in trouble, but just enough to do the things you need. I rarely use a torque wrench anymore though, and I don't want to carry it with anyways.
A less expensive torx alternative is available at Harbor Freight. A set of sizes that will cover all but the most hefty torx bolts and an adaptor that lets you use it with a 1/4" ratchet is about $3.00.
Remember any tool you use on the bike including for farkling, you should carry on the bike.
Welcome to the club.
