lamp warning

Post by michael Tobias »

Hello. i have been getting the little yellow triangle warning and the onboard computer says service and then switched to lamp. so the brake light was out...I replaced it with a regular dual filament bulb and it did not cancel the warning. so I got an led bulb replacement from http://www.superbrightleds.com ...1157-x45-T: 45HP-LED BAY15D

service was done at Max just before winter break so it does not really need anything done that I can tell. it runs fine..everything works

the bulb is bright and works well but the warning light still persists. no other bulbs are out. any ideas?

Using a LED tail light you might need a resistor as otherwise your ECU will not detect the LED as a functioning bulb ...

Why don't you just buy a pack of regular 1157 bulbs (2 for $1.99) and put one in. If the yellow lamp goes out then that's your answer. Cheap way to find an answer. When your done you'll have one to carry as a spare. :-k

Mike,

The problem may not be the taillight: the Riders Manual says the warning is displayed if any bulb (other than instrument illumination) is out of whack. The Manual says:

Bulb defective
General warning light shows yellow.
Warning-triangle symbol appears on the display.
LAMP appears on the display. A defective bulb places
your safety at risk because it is easier for other users to oversee the motorcycle. Replace defective bulbs as soon as possible; always carry a complete set of spare bulbs if possible.

Possible cause:
Low-beam headlight,
high-beam headlight,
side-light or turn indicator bulb defective...
Rear light or brake light bulb defective...

Check each of the other bulbs, both for bulb defect and for a bad connection at the base.

the strange part is that they all work. parking light, hi and low front all the signals. I have not ridden much at night yet so I cannot tell if the low is getting weak will it be that obvious during the day or will it register a warning when the bulb begins to fade?

I don't know the answer to your question mike but I do know that I was able to replace my parking light with an LED bulb and I did not need to fit a resistor.

Mike,

Just a thought. The ZFE on the R1200 series is smart enough to try to protect you against burned out rear lights.

If the brake light burns out - it turns the other bulb/filament on at half-brightness and then 100% brightness when you use the brake. It does something similar if the rear running light burns out (turns the brake light to half-brightness, then full brightness when you use the brake.)

Thing is - this works good enough that unless you're actually looking at the bulbs/filaments you may not realize one of the filaments is out (BTDT.. took a while to figure it out.) Might be worth pulling the taillamp assembly and hanging the bulbs/sockets where you can easily see them and watch what's going on when you use the brake.
