If your bike was misfiring what would you check?

My conundrum,

Misfiring is not the right word. It's like it has no power for a quarter of a second or so.

It never happens when I am just riding around town so I thought it might be rev related. It took it for a run and pushed the revs to about 4500. Result, - 3 losses of power in 6 km, they were all within a ten second period. I then opened it up to about 6000 rpm and let it run at that speed for about 15km.....nothing.

I rode from Canberra to Goulburn (100km / 60m) and it happened about 3 times.

Dirty Fuel?
Dodgy Sensors?
Some kind of crazy intermittent electrical fault?

I am taking it to the mechanic to get him to put it on the computer to check the sensors and general "well being", but if that turns out to be all good what would you guys start with?

What year?
How many miles?
Single or Dual Spark?

Does it sound like an ignition misfire (sharp "machine-gun" type interruption) or feel like a loss in the fuel supply (gradual loss/return of power)?

There is no bang or anything like that its like the bike just has no power for a very short time (about the time it would take to say "bop")

Since I am not keen to whiz around at speed in the dark I can't tell if the head light goes off. The feeling is like what would happen if you could go from throttle open to closed immediately and then back on again, all in a tiny fraction of a second.

My biggest concern is what would happen if I was heeled over in a corner when it happened. I hate not trusting my bike.

It could be bad fuel. It could also be that one of your plug wires are going bad. Mine behaved like yours but very quickly got worse.

Have you done any recent service requiring removal of the tank? Check fuel-pump connector and fuel quick-disconnects under the right-rear corner of the tank, but to me it sounds electrical...
Have you removed the too-tight zip-ties under the triple-tree in front of the tank? A broken ignition or cut-off switch wire intermittently disconnecting could cause this problem. There are many posts about this issue in the archives.

Thanks guys,

I have removed the Techlusion and so far I haven't had a recurrence. That is not to say that the Techlusion is the cause but I have tried had to get it to "stutter" again and nothing so far.
