2nd. BMW Battery Failure

Post by Ckaine »

Morning All:

Just went out to start my 2007R12R, and gauges cycle normally-hit the Starter-and nothing. All gauges go blank! This is my second BMW battery, first one replaced during warranty in October 2009. This one has been on a Xtreme Smart Charger when not being ridden. Haven't been riding much this Summer, work travel and such. Put the bike back on the charger, and it is charging-battery reads back 25%. I guess I will be ordering an Odyssey as there is nothing I dislike more than an unreliable form of transportation!!!

Thanks for letting me 'vent'!!

Regards:

Chris

We haven't yet heard about any failures of the Yuasa heavy duty option, the YTX14H-BS. It's known to fit properly, but is a little more expensive than the original YTX14-BS. So that's an option.

Thanks Liam:

I am contemplating the Odyssey 535-as I have read very good things about it. I really hate being stranded by the bike. As I stated this is the second battery failure since I bought the bike in Spring of 2008. I also saw another thread where someone put a 625 in, I am going to check on that. Where did you purchase your Odyssey??

Morning All:

I decided to install a Braille B14115. It just dropped in, and supposedly has 360 Amps of cranking power. Dropped right in, no fin cutting and such. Bike starts right up now, We will see if I made the 'correct' decision as time goes forward. I guess the question is; do you all leave your Smart Chargers attached all the time when not riding often?

Nope, only hook it up during winter.

Well.......during the Cee Bailey windshield testing, Joe informed me my my battery finally died. He had it replaced with another "battery" that appears to be similar to a BMW issue battery by a BMW shop. The label is gone so I don't EXACTLY know what battery it is. Occasionally when pressing the start switch nothing happens causing me to think I have a messed up replacement battery. Through trial and error I figured out that pumping the clutch a few times makes it fire right up. I do have a 2007. I just wonder if electrical switches and not dead batteries are causing some of these failures. Just a thought.
I finally got got an RT!

Morning Daveyator:

Thanks for the suggestion-but I checked the battery while in the bike, and once it was removed with my Fluke Multimeter, it was reading ~9 volts after being charged for 48 hours. It appears one of the 'cells' was dead. No way to resurrect that :( .
