please help me get this '03 running again... Im so close!

Post by dig'em »

Picked up a 2003 r1150r a week again that had been in storage for 5 years. The bike was not prepped for storage. So far I have done the following:
-removed fuel tank and drained old fuel then gave it a nice flush
-replaced fuel pump and filter (both were shot)
-confirmed all old fuel was purged from system and re-primed system with fresh fuel mixed with some seafoam
-changed plugs
-bled front and rear brakes
-changed engine, tranny, and final drive oil
-brand new air filter
-metal quick fuel disconnects

Tried to start the bike and it would sputter and pop but would not start. It sounded like it wasn't getting enough fuel. I pulled the injectors to confirm the they were getting fuel. They were so I took them to the BMW dealer to have them cleaned by the tech. After they were cleaned, put them back on and tried to fire the bike. Now it sputters and backfires but I can not keep it running unless I constantly blip the throttle. When I stop blipping it at any rpm, she starts to sputter and dies within 2 seconds.

The tech at BMW said that he cleaned and ran air through them but didnt have a way to test flow volume. He also said that if the cleaned injectors didn't work, that he would try new injectors before searching further for the problem.

Please help me with this. I am dying to ride this bike. It has 2600 miles on it and ran fine when it was put into storage. Should I check valve adjustment? I can't tell if TB's are sync'd if I can't keep it running, can I?

I was playing with it some more. I disconnected injectors and made sure fuel was coming out of the lines continuously as I cranked the engine over. Then i squirted fuel into the injector inlet and it ran like a scalded ape until the fuel was consumed. Tomorrow I'm going to check the fuel pressure at the injector. If it keeps the correct pressure while still starving for fuel, I'm going to order and install new injectors. If that doesn't work, its going to the shop. Still open to suggestions ...

Just a thought....When you replaced the fuel pump did you ensure that the hoses weren't kinked?
Also, you didn't inadvertently swap the hoses around when you replaced the QDs?
These things are very easy to do.

If you take a look at this thread all of the perils are there: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27195#p228046

Look for a fuel injector service center (think diesel equipment) locally before you buy new ones. They can clean and test yours for a fraction of new ones.

Thanks for the help guys. I was going to take the injectors to be serviced professionally. I took the pump and filter assembly out to the tank to check my work one last time and I found the problem. The hose inside the tank downstream of the filter had a hole in it. Replaced the hose, cranked her up and she purred like a kitten. I put 50 mikes on her this afternoon.

Problem solved

Yep - sounded like a fuel pump problem to me - glad to hear you figured out that it was the downstream hose! I've found that I diagnose a lot of my problems by revisiting what has changed since it last worked. I know that Paul Glaves has written about this and it's a technique I use constantly in the computer/technology business that I'm in. See what's changed and focus on that.
