Tank Bags?

Post by Bobmws »

I just picked up an '04 R1150R and am looking for a tankbag. I don't need any thing super large like a Multivario, a medium size bag will do for the Epass, remote, gloves, earplugs, etc.
What are you using?

Hi there!

I use a fairly inexpensive magnetic tank-bag called a Tech7 Sport it's the third
bag in the link below. Obviously I'm in the UK so I've little idea what soft touring luggage
is available in sunny FLA!

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/Ri ... 20test.pdf

I've ridden at over 90 mph with the Tech7 and it hasn't budged at all. It's also very handy when you need to re-fuel as it will simply
lift off the bike. The only caveat is that the magnetic flaps MUST be kept spotless if you don't want tiny scratches in the tank paintwork.
I use clean silky cloth to keep the bag from touching the paint. It didn't score very well in the soak test but with the storm cover
fitted mine has never leaked.

If you can find one of the older flexible Marsee bags, they are great. NOT the newer ones with the hard top. I had one of those too and didn't like it. Check eBay. Can't lose with Marsee. And the magnetic ones stick very well to the tank.

Well it appears the magnetic bags work well on this bike. Obviously the same caveats regarding keeping the surface clean apply as they do with a strapped on bag. I like the idea of being able to remove it without fooling with the straps as I do on the K.
Shopping to commence.... :D

Strap bags worked well for me for 20 years, but then I jumped ahead to "no touch" tankbag mount systems and wouldn't choose anything else.

Currently use a small Bags Connection tankbag:
http://www.twistedthrottle.com/bags-con ... ing-system
It ends up pretty full of electronics and misc. items, but my habit is to remove everything at stops to prevent theft. This particular bag is small enough to fit in a System case, even with my GPS still attached to the bag's device mount.

Springtime bike projects include addition of the electrified tank mount ring, which eliminate some bag on/off fiddling.

My wife has the Engage tankbag model in the same product line, a better size for stuff storage.

+1 on Bags-Connection.
I use the Engage size on my 1150, and find it the goldilocks size for me. It would be the perfect size for what you describe your needs to be. Very durable. Very secure. At first I was a little concerend about the "horseshoe" connector that fits on the filler cap, concerned about the aesthetics; but the bag is off so rarely that I hardly ever see it and when the bag is off it doesn't bother me at all.
There are a number of sizes that use the same mount. I would really look no farther.
And it will never run the risk of scratching your tank because it floats above it on the connector.

Thanks, I was actually looking at that model after sweatmark pointed me to that style bag. Definitely in the running for me.

I will jump on the 'no-touch' bandwagon here also. I used magnetic and strapped tank bags for years but my current Held is the first no-touch one I have had. And I never intend to use anything else. Unfortunately, my model is no longer offered by Held but it used the same mounting as the ones linked above and that is where I would go for a new bag.

Quick on and off, no worries about the tank!

OK, you guys convinced me about the no touch mounts. I bought the smaller bag here: http://www.motorcyclegear.com/parts/lug ... k_bag.html
Had a discount coupon from previous purchases and free shipping! =D>

that link goes to a Cor-Tech bag. That is not the one we're talking about. Different mount also. But it looks touchless and may be fine--just no experience with that one.
Let us know what you think. A nice thing about the bags-connection bags, specifically the engage bag, is that it curves to sort of hug the shape of the tank on the 1150 (and 1200).
The size of the small bag looks appropriate for what you want, though I think the engage may be somewhat larger???
haven't measured

Correct, different brand, similar product & mount. In fact the mounting ring parts share some similar #'s. You don't suppose there is one supplier selling to several manufacturers? ;)
I set an old airhead bag on the bike for sizing and visualization and I believe the bag I ordered will do just what I need it to.
Thanks to all for the tips & info.
I'll be back with more questions as I get to know this bike.

I love my Marsee - it's one of the older types that doesn't have a hard top. Using the Corona mount, it's simply awesome.

I revived this thread to ask, do the gas cap mounted bags discussed above not scratch/burnish the tank paint as others do? I'd like to avoid having to paste some sort of masking material on the area under the bag to keep from damaging the paint. Only touring do I really have use for a tank bag.

Correctomundo.

My engage bag, because of it's age, is drooping a bit toward the rear, but hasn't marked the tank. It's about 80,000 miles old.

I have an old Eclipse and it is too wide. I also have a RoadGear magnetic that is plenty roomy, and fits much better.

Also more friendly at gas stops.

The gas cap mounted option is the 'no touch' option since the tank bag does not actually touch the tank at all. At least mine doesn't. So there is nothing to scratch the paint.

I've used my Eclipse [harness type] for 25+ years on various tanks, have also used my RoadGear [magnetic] in the last few years. Honestly neither one has ever scratched a tank. Keeping the base clean is {IMO} a biggie......jus'sayin.

FWIW, there's a used SW Moto Engage bag with the mounting ring on the BMWMOA Flea Market.

Thanks, guys. Interesting discussion. I'd have spent a good long time trying various bag options to come to your smarts on this myself. How much does the cap anchor type seem like part of the tank or does it sort of hover over it? Part of the appeal to me of the magnetic type with silk (undies?) is that it might conform better to the bulging top of the tank. Is that so? I'm thinking of a pretty small, flatish bag in any case. My question is how well do the Bags Connection bags conform to the top of the RR tank? Photos on the Honda link above make it look very good.

Just as another option, and what has worked very well for me, is this:
and not very expensive.
