Steering stem Loose?

Post by GBag »

Recently i have been hearing a bit of clatter from the bike going over bumps. I thought I was hearing stuff chattering in my panniers but today, I just put the rims back on with new rubber. I walked it out of the garage and hit the front brake and heard a bit of clatter. holding the front brake on & rocking the bike I'm hearing this clatter but am not sure if this is just the brake pads moving a little or the steering stem rocking ever so slightly. Any Ideas ...Opinions on this. I'm about to leave on Friday for a 13 day trip around the US and this is now making me a little apprehensive.

Mine did that too for a while, it was the brake rotor; the rivets that hold it together became loose. Apparently there was a redesign on the rotor rivets. It was mostly an annoyance; the brakes worked fine but the rattling was horrible. I had to spend $300 for a new rotor to fix it.

The rotors move just a little because they float, Wiggle them and see if its the noise.

Thanks for the reply. It was the rotors moving around. Just finished 12 days & 7000 miles around the country. No Problems what so ever.

Floating rotors, that sound is apsolutelly normal.Just drive it.Best preventive maintenance is to check all bolts, fasteners on your bike at least every 6,000mls intervale. You should be OK.
