daytime running lights
Anyone have a suggestion for installing daytime running lights on an R1150r? What brand did you use? I'm looking at CREE LED V3 Daytime Running Lights for $175. but installation is the issue.
Re: daytime running lights
Noone has responded to this thread, so I thought I should! I walked into the Santa Fe BMW dealer in 2004 to pick up a tire for my riding buddy. I rode a Harley Softtail at the time, but when I saw that new RT, I could not help myself... especially since it was BLACK, which to me is the right color for a BMW. I bought the bike, and among the features it had was a tall windshield and running lights mounted to the forks. I did a search and found out what the lights were... Mondo running lights. http://mondomotos.com/lighting/led/mm10 They were fantastic! When I recently bought another 2004 RT, the thing that swayed me to this particular bike was the same running lights on the forks, and a tall windshield.
Re: daytime running lights
I just installed these above mentioned mondo lights, and they do the job. They are diffuse, so won't light up the road so noticeably, but the street signs up over the road really glow, so you know the light is getting out there, to be seen by others. There are mounting tabs low in my 03 R1150R forks that were used for these lamps, a good position for non-focused lamps. It doesn't flood the driver compartment of the car close ahead of you. I have not yet been flashed for high beam or dimming, so I'm thinking they aren't too harsh for oncoming cars.
The mondo lights are great for conspicuity, which is what the daytime running light is all about. sIt was a simple install after filing the mount brackets to fit the fork well. A quarter inch diameter round file did the job efficiently taking down the corner that was in the way.

I have a set of Hella F50 's that I have used for the past 7 years. I have them mounted under the oil coolers and have not had any issues. They are on all the time as running lights and have a switch mounted on the handle bars. They are wired to a relay so they are only on with the ignition. Been running these for the last 70,000 miles.
Re: daytime running lights
+1 on the Hella FF50's, had them on my R for about 30,000 miles mounted on the Wunderlich crash bars. Switched with a relay off the headlight, have them on all the time for conspicuity. I've replace both bulbs just once. They're quite bright and light up the street signs but not as much as the high beam. I get flashed every once in a while with them on in early morning darkness, I try to keep them pointed low...

Re: daytime running lights
I do not ride much at night, but efficient, reasonably priced daytime running lights like the Mondo MM10 LED running lights will be on my shopping list. The 10Watt draw of each light is much more friendly to my bike's 400Watt permanent magnet alternator than the typical 55Watt Halogen driving light. I had an inexpensive auto parts store set of 35Watt Halogen lights on my 2002 OilHead and they worked great . . . except for the considerable heat they generated while stopped. The car type alternator on the Boxer had no problem powering them, even at an idle.
LED lights are not yet powerful enough for night time illumination of the road ahead. But they are great for increased daytime visibility, while consuming 1/5th the power of Halogens. Mounted on the lower fork tree, along with the headlight they create a light triangle that registers as danger in the minds of on-coming drivers - - - and that is exactly their purpose.

I have a set of Piaa 1100X LED's on mine mounted to Wonderlich's crash bar. They don't seem to do a lot at night but I bet you can seem me coming in the daytime. I also put Hyper Lights on the rear just in case you have any doubt I am stopping.
