Quick Disconnects - Are they necessary?
Just like the title says: my quick disconnects failed and I am not interested in dishing out $100 to replace them with metal ones. Can I just run a complete line of fuel hose?

That's what I did when they failed on me, get some fuel injection fuel line if you need any more and fuel injection hose clamps, they don't dig into the rubber line like regular wormgear hose clamps .
A bit messier when you need to remove the fuel tank, but I just run the fuel level down and then drain into a fuel can .

You could use a piece of copper pipe and jubillee clips to make a join where the connector was.

A couple of years ago in an emergency we used one of these to repair a fuel line, as far as I know it is still being used, (I now carry a couple in my tool bag)

I've done the above when my QD's failed and left me on the side of the road. I still carry one along with a couple spare FI clamps just in case. But those barbed fittings are very difficult to remove when you remove the tank for whatever service. You will end up with a busted knuckle or two when trying to pull them apart. You'd me much happier in the long haul if you just go ahead and spend the money for the right QD's.mnnden wrote:A couple of years ago in an emergency we used one of these to repair a fuel line, as far as I know it is still being used, (I now carry a couple in my tool bag)

I think that dates us all to that discussion way back when, but you don't even have to use the barbed one, I carried a 5/16 " brass tube, about 3" long for emergencies. Never used it in an emergency, but still have it around and carry it.mnnden wrote:A couple of years ago in an emergency we used one of these to repair a fuel line, as far as I know it is still being used, (I now carry a couple in my tool bag)
I tried it without the QDs and dealing with removing the tank and the FI hose calmps was a real hassle.
I tried the "small parts" version of the QDs--they were cheaper, and the o rings swelled too much. I then went to the SS ones at beemer Boneyard and never looked back. They are a good investment for peace of mind and working on your bike. That is likely the first thing to do on the 1150. The OEM ones are cr-ap. There are NUMEROUS reports of them failing with gas spraying on your leg, or falling apart in your hands.
They are on the short list of things to do, along with loosening the tie wraps on the wires up front.

Re: Quick Disconnects - Are they necessary?
I realize that money can be tight, & $100 on quick disconnect can seem a waste, but that same $100 can seem a bargain when stranded 400 miles from home, Mine went at about 40k, I was at a gas station about 20 miles from home, a simple call & a truck & trailer was on the scene, (lucky!!) I had the disconnects in the garage, (one of those rainy day projects I never got to). it is really quite simple to do, I think a lot of people are intimidated by having to lift the tank off, No reason to be, very simple, I think it would help to have the manual, but really quite straight forward. If I were to advise you, it would be to do it, you will enjoy your ride that much more, I think I can say with certainty, they are going to fail! When is the question? I think there should have been a recall, jmop

To veer a bit off subject...where can one get the replacement o-rings?
locally and reasonable...$2.70 from BMW seems a tad high to me...I did spring for the stainless QD's years ago from Omega. I believe they were 5/16" and the numbers were FT-LCD 220-05
and FT-LCD 170-05
quanity 2 of each. very good quality and never had a problem. Like to hve the viton?? o-rings as spares to carry

Not sure, but I think Beemerbone Yard sells them,Chuxter wrote:To veer a bit off subject...where can one get the replacement o-rings?![]()

I would think you could get them from Omega too.

Re: Quick Disconnects - Are they necessary?
The R1150R has way too little chrome and shiny parts. The SS quick disconnects add a little of that shiny stuff to an otherwise boring appearance, compared to Harleys. Plus, they make it a LOT easier to take the tank off to check those electrical wiring harnesses that get rubbed in two and cause fatal electrical failures....

Re: Quick Disconnects - Are they necessary?
I have been running 2 short pieces of copper tubing with hose clamps for more than 15k. I have had the tank off a few times-- its no hassle really. Point the disconnected fuel hose towards a container for future use in the lawn mower...
