Motor struggles at 5-7k rpm

Post by whitelightning »

Jumped back into the R bike fold with a 38000 mile R. When briskly accelerating, the motor seems to surge or gasp from around 5k to redline. Sorta feels like it's starving for ...something. Not a clean rush to redline. Also low RPMs seem lumpier. First ride I stalled the bike in the sellers driveway, dumping me and motorcycle on the ground. Rather embarrassing to say the least. Hurt my pride more than the bike. Cold start is also a bear, guess you really need to use the lever.

Do you have any maintenance history from the previous owner ??
You may be due a fuel filter, plug wires and plugs .
Also a battery that's on it's last legs will cause odd engine problems .
Yes, you do need that start lever to start the engine from cold, it will start eventually, but with it, it fires off after a few revolutions .

+1 on the fuel filter. Sounds like classic symptoms of a partially clogged fuel filter.

I agree it could be the fuel filter. Got some of the PO's maintenance records, and see a fuel filter change at about 9k miles. Bike is now 38k. Same with A/C. So, I guess that those 2 should be the starting point. Plugs were changed within the last 10k ($28 a piece! Really?)

Is there an aftermarket fuel filter instead of OEM?

Guess I have some research in my future.

Tight valves will exhibit those symptoms.

whitelightning,
Are we are talking about an '09 R1200R?? That bike does not have a cold start lever. What model year R is it?

I just externalized my fuel filter and switched it to an Emgo filter. It is black so blends in with my black 2002R. I have no idea how well it will work.

I'm getting ready to install new QD's from Beemer Boneyard and while I'm at it I'm going to externalize my fuel filter. I did the same on my '03 R back in 2006. I bought a generic inline fuel filter from one of the auto parts houses and it worked fine.

I'm planning on a semi complete service as time permits. Valve adjust, oil and filter change, replace a/c and plugs and plug wires, externalize fuel filter and new plug wires. Fuel filter will probably be an aluminum bodied stainless 10-20 micron element inline filter, only 'cause it looks cleaner and is easily cleaned.

Anything I'm missing?

Get the ignition coil checked. Mine had to be replaced on my 04 at 32k miles.
Same symptoms. 4k+ rpm surging and bucking.
