tires again
my local machanic said i can put a michelin pilot power 3 190 on the rear instead of a 180 .will this be a no go or is it ok the 190 should last longer .by the way this will be my second pilot power 3's and i found them better than the metzler z6 and the michelin pilot road 3's. in all aspects grip, handling and wet.

Ahum, this is the R1150R section and you're riding a R1200R so why not ask this in the R1200R section?

But if I check the Michelin site they advise the 180/55 ZR 17 M/C (73W) R TL but you can go for the 190/50 ZR 17 M/C (73 W) TL or the 190/55 ZR 17 M/C (75 W) TL.

Re: tires again
On a couple of occasions I have gone up one size on the rear of my '04 R. I went from a 170 to 180 without problem. But bottom line........you really ought to follow manufacturer's recommendations. They know far more than you do.

Re: tires again
welp, orderd tires this morning. wasn't planning on them, but I got spammed with an ebay offer, and I fell for it LOL.
Continental Conti-motions. Had a 50$ paypal credit, and got a set for $100. Read a few reviews, and a coworker has them on his FJR, he swears by them, so we shall see. My rear is cord happy right now..and warm weather is coming so good timing for the ad. (I HOPE)

Re: tires again
I love the Conti-Motions. To me, they are equivalent to the also-excellent Pirelli Diablo Stradas that I was using before (nearly identical weight, construction, and road feel) and they cost half as much. The front lasted almost 10,000 miles. I don't know why they aren't more popular than that.

FWIW,
For street use the smaller section tire will steer faster. The 180190/200 are really for marketing aesthetics.
Wide tires will not extend the mileage.

excellent, thanks. It has the metzeler z6's on it. THey were OK. but wore out fast-though I do mostly just straight line commute.
I THINK maybe the continental got a bad rap when there was that recall for the OTHER versions? conti sport i think it was.
continental makes decent car tires in my experience. the deal I got was "close-out" supposedly so maybe they're done making them?
anyway you slice it, Gonna be night and day compared to my flat striped, worn out rear lol. I always use my tires to the bitter end. just ride gently.

Re: tires again
funny side note....
bmw shop is over an hour away. so i was looking for a tire shop.
AND. it seems nobody local wants my business to mount and balance my new tires i just got.
Yamaha shop (note: im a yamaha fanatic) The Owner, who I know well, gave me a guilt trip "we don't have a way to charge for that, next time, keep me in mind and get the tires here. we do that free with purchase" wtf
so. called small local shop, hes out of business lol
I broke down and called harley shop. (eek) sounded like I was in luck, he asked right questions....then told him it was an older BMW. then it turned into some story about tire warranty and a bad experience, and not wanting to do it. Weird.
SO, called Honda/Kaw/suzuki shop, which i thought was out of business. 56 bucks total. just like that.
Figured it would be simple. NOPE.
just looked at forecast.....63 next week. Got some work to do to be ready!

Re: tires again
WOW: A tire change is easy on any machine. The machine doesn't know the brand of bike the wheels from. Pretty stupid for them to turn down business. Didn't realize these are considered older BMW now!!!!! I bought my own Coates tire machine many years ago and it's nice to be able to change my own tires.

well it gets better....wife mentioned she Thought maybe we'd make a day out of it Take the drive north and go to the beemer shop, check out some gear, the new bikes, then take her and kids to the mall...etc.
JUST got off the phone with BMW shop. $102 dollars PLUS weights L-O-L yeah that's a big NO.
I think I might go ahead and get a tire machine at some point, such a simple tool. and I'm irritated now. I used to change tires every day at a car dealership. I could have all 4 tires on and off the car, mounted, balanced in under an hour. I did 2 sets of motorcycle tires while I worked there, and it didn't take 30 minutes. That's ridiculous.

NEVER had that happen, any tires. Other bikes, fronts almost double the rears.

You need to go into the corners harder and come out soft.

Re: tires again
I am in the same boat as Vann. 7k and the tires are shot, but i always push it a little. I did have the Bridgestone BT-021's only last 4000 and 4500 miles respectively, but they wore evenly to the wear bars from side to side. It was the summer of divorce, and fresh pavement on 30 miles of OH 555. I bought 3 sets of tires that year and loved it.wncbmw wrote:I don't believe I have ever gotten over 7,000 miles on a tire, front or rear! Regardless of brand! The front lasted almost 10,000 miles

Well. a few hundred miles on the contimotion....on crappy, sandy, cold, and wet roads. Took them on my super curvy state park road to get em scrubbed and get used to them... I'm QUITE impressed. Feels like a new bike. There is a much more gradual roll when turning in.
But, I have to remember, My Metzelers were corded and completely SHOT! LOL 3" completely flat spot...that would explain the dramatic roll in turns.
But yeah I'm pleased, they'll do just fine. Tread wear will be the key. That's what I'm looking for. Miles(safe miles) per dollar.
