Brakes 2001 R1150R

Post by DrGubs »

Whats up with all that Black crap in the brake fluid????

MY rear brake got stuck and then I blew the rear Brake line... This is the first vehicle that I have owned that requires brake fluid change every 10,000km...

How long can the rubber stuff come off the lines before all the brake lines should be replaced... I currently have 83,000km on the bike...

You should replace your brake lines NOW

I would replace all of the lines with braided stainless steel lines, not much more than stock OEM lines .

Braided hoses for the win.

The Rockster came with them as standard so you may be able to get a second hand set from a breakers that are the right lengths (especially if you have the ABS gubbins)

I replaced mine with SS lines this month. Was not hard to do.
And you should replace the brake fluid every year regardless of the miles!

Thanks for all the help!

I finished of the season replacing the rear line (to SS) it was leaking, I have a SS set for the front ordered with a complete set of new pads front and rear... Last fall was so incredible I did my final oil change and cleaning in the last week of Sept. thinking the season was over but still manage 8,000 km and rode right up to Dec.24th... It was a pleasure doing another oil change in December because I got a wonderful extension to my riding season... I live in Canada and have a few months to get some mods and upgrades done... I really had a problem seeing when night riding so I replaced my headlight with an LED all in one unit plus added 2 LED fill driving lights... I also had a heat shield made for my left side luggage. I have a Two Brothers muffler on my bike and the heat was melting the luggage, the muffler is shorter than the OEM muffler. When I was carrying a large duffle on the seat it covered the gap between the bike and the luggage I think that might have trapped the hot exhaust gases and caused the problem...

The plan is to do Toronto / California Coast and back solo trip this summer... Can't wait to get out riding again!

DrGubs, you have any feedback, pics, or other information about that LED headlight upgrade?

DrGubs,
Since you have not got the parts yet, here is a highly detailed, time and fluid saving outline on replacing brake fluid and brake lines:
