Rear seal leakage

Post by wardie »

Has anyone else experienced a rear seal leakage on their Rockster or Roadster. I wonder if this is a common problem? Mine was replaced at 33,000 under warranty.

yup - most of us here I think.

I've had the seals at both end of the shaft go.

Haven't had it happened yet at 10,500 (10.500 for you metric people) miles.

I think it took mine a while to have the first happen - then a bit more for the second.

Just keep the area clean and you'll soon spot it.

It shouldn't cause any problems if it DOES happen anyway so don't worry too much. :)

:? Just had a 6000 ml & annual service done at my local dealer. After a spin on a loaned bike (R1100s) I returned. The mechanic said that I had a small leak from the rear gearbox seal, he had the gaitor rubber removed between the rear pinion & drive shaft housing, he showed me a small trickle of oil in the shaft housing with a torch. I would have to leave the bike as it would take 3 1/2 hrs to remove rear end to renew seal. That was fine as they gave me a F650GS to get me home. On my return to pick up the bike I was informed that it had not infact been the gearbox seal that had been leaking, but had been the pinion seal 'o' ring that was the culprit, which they had renewed under warranty...... I will keep an eye on my gearbox level & will keep a periodic check inside the rubber gaiter.....Oh bye the way the annual & 6000 +tyre fit....£230..

Sure enough, I read this thread last week at some point, which cursed me. I noticed a small leak yesterday. :x

I have an appointment Tuesday; hopefully warranty covers it.
