Synthetic Oil or...

Post by Blitz »

Just wanted to get an idea how many of you are using a full synthetic oil and how often you do the oil changes as a result. Thanks.

FWIW, I will be going to Mobil1 at ~10k...another 4000miles.
I will then do a 5000mi oil change interval....now it's 4000mi w/ Castol dino.

I stick with dino bones. If the bike were to warrant the use of synthetic oil then BMW engineers would have put it in the bike.

And I also stick with the scheduled maintenance laid out in the manual. I figure that those German engineers may just know something about the bikes that they design and make as well.

I switched over to BMW synthetic at 12k miles on the odo. I change my oil every 3k miles. I now have close to 33k miles on the odo and the boxer engine is happy as a clam. No oil usage and runs smoothly as ever.

Not that I completely understand the difference, I use Mobil 1. :? It is supposed to be a “true synthetic” oil. I waited until my machine stopped using oil before I made the change.

I started using a Mobil 1 type oil fully synthetic (Shell's equivelent 5-50w) after only 1000klms...now at 40,000 I've just started using a semi synthetic.(Castrol magnitec 10-40w)..no problems here.

Just had the 20k (12k miles) service done 2 days ago. I asked BMW about using synth. They are still recommending dino 20W50. They said the synth oil is not quite as viscous, and may result in some minor oil leaks/drops, although I have not read about this ever happening on this board.

I stick with the maint. schedule and use the recommended fluids, etc. I change the oil/filter every 5k kms (3k miles). The R rides fantastic and has been running even better now that it's nicely broken in.

So far the dino oil has been fine. I top up a little (100 ml maybe) after long rides (1000 kms or more) and check the oil after each outing. Burning next to nothing, if any oil.

Synthetics...

Post by dallara »

Synthetics all the way around here... and all Amsoil.

20W/50 in the engine.

75W/140 in the gearbox.

75W/90 in the final drive.

Change interval on the engine oil - 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

Change interval on the gearbox and final drive - 6,000 to 8,000 miles. (every other engine oil change).

Why? Because oil is cheap insurance, changing it often can't hurt, and it makes me feel better...

Cheers!

Engine 15/50 Mobil 1 synth
Tranny BMW 75/140 Synth
Rear Drive Mobil 1 75/90 Synth

R1150R switched at 6,000 miles
R1200ST switched at 4,700 miles

Neither bike uses oil at all.
