A friend of mine found that his auto had one hidden in it by the manufacturer, for research the dealer said.

"All information gotten from it is confidential and can't be used by the authorities," the dealer went one. “Only to be used to record data - speeds, areas of the country, etc.â€Â
My friend asked if the information could be obtained with a subpoena?
"Oh, I don't know about that," was the response.
"Can it be removed?" asked my friend.
"Oh no, it is part of the wiring and nothing short of replacing all the wiring in the car can remove it."

I understand the dealer also said something along the lines of; if you're not doing anything wrong, what does it matter?
My friend did not take much solace from all of that. Oh, one thing, it appears that the transponder does not work all wrapped up with aluminum foil.
We each do what we can . . .
