New owner... first ride

Post by Mianiac »

Now I have the new battery in and got the bike started I went for my first ride. The first ride on a bike in five years, and the first ride ever on a BMW. I just went down the road a bit and back just in first and second gear. The torque twist of the motor I had heard about is definately noticable. I also notice a bit of a clunk as you apply and let off throttle in first. Is this normal? It's as if there's a little slack in the drive train. The bike only has 9K on it so I don't believe it should be worn out. ;-) Any suggestions for things to look for as I take it for its maiden voyage tomorrow? thanks Mike in Maine

Congrats on the new bike!
Clunking noises from drivetrain slack are normal. You will instinctively learn how to avoid making those noises. Rest assured that by the time you hit 6th gear you won't be hearing any clunkig noises anymore!
Enjoy the ride!

Where did you find an '02 with only 9000 miles on it?
I have an '04 with 30,000. That just blows my mind.

A BMW that doesn't have some clunking in the transmission is probably broken! Welcome to the club! Congrats on the new machine. It is a fine ride.

You will learn how to miminize the clunk and as was said, it gets less so at higher gears.

That bike has 9,000 miles on it. It's no virgin.

What am I implying by that analogy?...Take her up close to the rev limiter a couple of times...Wind through the gears aggressively...
But keep everything well lubed in the process.

She'll LOVE you for it.

you'll soon not notice the torque-twist - unless you get on a new 1200 model as a loaner and wonder where it is :) (GS before anyone starts rumour-mongering ;))

Boxer, she may not be a virgin, but he is, sot of (again).
Mianiac, don't listen to Boxer. I suggest instead that you let her take you gently. Don't go all the way for now. You'll slowly gain self-confidence. Until you've been together for a while, rember to play it safe. Leave Boxer's aggressive style for later in your relationship.

Tommy
I bought my 02 black R with only 5200 miles on it :D

Got it on Ebay for a VERY good price. I love Ebay. Bought 3 bikes on it so far.

It was all I expected...

I'm really pleased with my first ride... only about 40 miles, but that was all I had time for. It's been a while since I've ridden a bike so that may taint my impressions. It really does't appear this is a bike designed to putt around town. It sure somes into its own when you get up to speed and settle yourself into the seat. I'm afraid there's some projects around the house they may go undone this summer! I can already see a little scoot around the Gaspe in my future! Thanks to all Mike

It does like to stretch its legs but I find it OK for commuting on as well. I only have a 10 mile trip to work and on sunny mornings it's just not enough and I feel like riding right past and disappearing over the horizon.
I've only had mine 2 weeks but I've come to love it already and can't wait to get out there to put some serious miles on it!

noticing a trend?

Post by Mianiac »

I've been the classic car route for many years and even strayed to the "other" two cylinders on a couple of occasions and I'll have to say one of the first things I noticed coming into the BMW fold is that people love to put miles on these as opposed to being proud of low milage... I think I'm going to like this!

 Hi Chris, I see you're in Yorkshire - I am in Sheffield!
Do you go to Rainbow for your bikes?
I have had my R1150 R since October last year after p/exing my R1100S.
It's nice to see another rider a little closer to home using the forum
ps mine has only done 11K and I got a real bargain, panniers, ABS, heated grips, etc.
