I know there was at least one photographer on this board but I'm terrible with names and have no idea if he is still here or if there are any others amongs us. If any of you have experience with this I have a couple questions with regards to getting some shots published.
I recently completed a dog sledding expedition on Baffin Island (for those of you who don't know it, it's in Canada's way far north, above the arctic circle). I think the combination of bringin a decent camera (Canon 30D)and the spectacular setting may have made up for my lack of experience allowing me to bring back a few pretty good shots amongs the hundreds that I took.
I'm looking for advice on how to get some of these published appart from just blindly sending them to any magazine that I think could be interested? Also wondering about getting on other channels through which I might be able to sell some shots (like Getty Images)
Also, I would really like to share some of them with you guys but am worried about the implications from a rights management and publisher interest point of view if they are posted here first?
Hopefully someone here can help!
Cheers,
Justin

Though you might get some help from our resident photogs here, you could also try this Canon site:

Use their site search function and see if you can't find the answers to your questions. Lots of good information there.

Justin,
Sounds like you went on a pretty amazing expedition.
Your best chance to get your photos published would be to write up a story to go along with the images or if this is beyond your literary talents, have someone else do so. Magazine and newspaper travel and feature sections would love to publish an account of a trip as unique as yours. You just need to give them the complete package.
To try to just sell the images alone would be much more difficult. I've been a professional photographer for 33 years, the last 26 at a major metropolitan newspaper in the San Francisco area. You will not believe how many calls we get offering "great" photos with the majority of them being unpublishable. Note : I'm not discounting your photos, I'm just trying to give you an idea of what photo editors face from all those photographers out there who think they have unique images.
If your photos are good and you are persistant, you'll find a way to get published. I would start with your local newspapers and local magazines. Also check out some of the specialty magazines that are out there. (dog, travel, nature related) Look in the masthead of the magazine for submission information. Some accept unsolicited work however you'll probably find many want both words and pictures. Getty, Associated Press, Reuters, etc. will not even look at your photos unless they are of a timely spot news nature or incredibly unique.
As for sharing them on this forum, none of the above publications would care so feel free to share them with anyone.
Hope this helps...good luck!

Toner: Thanks for the site, I've now wasted a full day during which I was supposed to be working!!!
Tao: Thanks for the advice, hadn't thought of the dog mag angle. I've been working on the article for the past couple weeks. Hoping to have something to send off in the next week or two. I've uploaded the pics to an album site and will post the details in a seperate thread in the cafe.
Cheers,
Justin
