GM to discontinue Turnsignals....

Post by ebiker »

Detroit May 25, 2006 (UPI)

During a major press conference in Detroit today, General Motors has announced their 2008 model motor vehicle line will leave the factory without any turnsignals.

GM spokesman Wylie Howe, of Detroit law firm Dewey, Cheatem & Howe, said most American drivers no longer have any use for turnsignals anyway so why spend money and research on a now useless safety item. Motorists now rely on the horn to inform other motorists of their driving intentions, said Mr. Howe.

Mr. Howe said manufacture suggested list prices for 2008 GM models will probably remain the same or increase slightly as research into louder horns continues.

Detroit soccer mother Debbie Dipstinski told reporters that GM's decision to drop the turnsignal attachment on steering columns is an "awesome idea". Ms. Dipstinski said she doesn't have time to use turnsignals because she has her hands full with a cell phone, coffee cup or ten teenagers she packs into her SUV.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) when informed of GM's decision to discontinue the signal safety, announced a harder push for motorcycle helmet laws in all states. NHTSA spokesperson Joan Claybrook said GM's reluctance to equip their motor vehicles with signals devices will result in more traffic accidents., but a Government mandated all rider helmet law should help protect the public from the social burden of unhelmeted bikers.

"After all", said Ms. Claybrook, "helmets save lives"

What the previous poster failed to note is the reason for removing the turn signal was the need to relocate the headlight high beam switch from the steering column back to its historic original location of the floorboard under the driver's left foot. The reason for this reversion is the large number of nighttime accidents involving older blondes who have gotten their foot entangled in the steering column while attempting to activate/deactivate their high beams.
