Any ideas on how to care for the flat black paint. Wax, paint sealers or ?
Thanks,

PAINT PLUS

Post by DKSTR »

AS bIG pAPA SEZ: Wash & dry. Works fine. Paint quality is very high here. Any polish will add a slight satin sheen to the black. that being sed....

I DO apply KLASSE to mine. It is an acrylic base product that bonds with the finish and does add some satin sheen to the black, but I don't care. There is more to the finish than flat (matte) black paint & sealer. There are decals, semi-gloss paint, anodized surfaces, plastics, and...that finish on the wheels is not paint; it's plastic.

All these finishes will deteriorate with time and exposure to the elements. Applying a product will help preserve the finish and keeps it cleaner between washings. Many, like KLASSE, repel dirt and protect the finishes from light abrasion, light scratches, acids from insect guts eating into the finishes, air and water borne polutants and from UV light damage. Did I mention MUCH easier to clean as well?

I very (VERY) rarely actually hose off my bikes. Only once with the Rockster in 8,000 miles. I DO wipe it down with damp rags as necessary. I especially like microfibre.

Check these out: klassedirect sells at discount.

I agree. I would rather have a bit of a sheen than dirt and scratches. I used Klasse in the 80's and really like it back then. Do you use the All-in-One or the Sealant Glaze?
Thanks for the input.

PAINT

I just use the All in One now because it's easier. Diluted with water (either in a container or on a wet rag) it makes a good cleaner. For a coating I just apply it from a damp rag without rubbing unless there is a defect on the surface. Usually just a bit of light rubbing is sufficient. Very little of the product is necessary, you should see just a slight haze on the surface.

However, if you do want the best protection the Sealant Glaze works great. But let this dry thoroughly and use a damp rag to wipe off. On gloss paint this stuff produces an amazingly deep shine and color. Many Concours contestants swear by this, which is how I heard about it, and maintain up to 12 coats. Some like carnuba wax but it does melt on the surface on a hot sunny day and has other relatively undesirable characteristics.

On the Rockster black it took several applications before the haze buffed out easily from the matte clearcoat. Until then, the haze wipes off easily with a damp rag. I really like microfibre. The instructions say you don't have to wait until it dries to buff but I get better results letting it dry well before wiping off the excess. In my climate, Arizona/California, that's about 5 minutes.

KLASSE works really well on the shaft housing and engine cases also, helping to keep the finish cleaner, easier to clean, protected, and glossy.

Oh, I guess we all know not to seal or wax chrome...? Chrome needs to breathe. Sealing it will eventually produce rust pits, maybe bubbling, yah?

honda spray cleaner and polish seemed to work nicely on everything, leaving the flat black nice and flat, but looking like new! that stuff is amazing! clean your windshield and face shield also, it make for less bug sticks!

Having spilt petrol on the tank which left a wihte haze that wouldn't wash off I tried normal car wax (under the seat first just to check).

Result: Still matt black but the haze has gone and the tank looks like new

The rain beads on the tank too, which is nice (not the rain but that it beads).
