BMW topcase

Post by Sit »

Have looked at some of the other posts about top cases on the R's. Was wondering if anyone has found a BMW top case/trunk from another model that they have had success adapting to fit on the R using the R's luggage rack. Right now I have the system case mounts, the luggage rack and the mounting plate for the rear soft bag. I would like to get a BMW trunk to fit on it some how. Any ideas?

Mate, you are in luck! I have just chased up the same thing for my rockster.

The luggage plate from the K1200GT (old model) with BMW's small (31 litre) top box fit straight onto the R1150R rear rack. Remember to order the lock kit and BMW touring badge for the top box if you go that way.

The luggage plate is a plastic base with moulded hooks that lock onto the rack, the top box bolts to the plate. The plate detaches from the rack with a simple, lockable cam, which can be keyed alike to the bike.

Most BMW dealers don't know the K1200GT and the R1150R use the same rack by the way.

Of course, you could bolt any top box you wanted to the luggage plate, but then you'd need an extra key. It would be cheaper than BMW bits though.
Argue your limitations and they are.

Are you talking about the soft top case as seen here: ?

Or are you talking about this case: (Which I have never seen up untill I tried searching for pics for this thread)

Why didn't anyone tell me this 2nd hard case existed!?... Assuming its the K bikes hard case and not JC Whitney or other.

I was talking about the hard case. My Rockster has the locking plate with the soft case already fitted, and I was investigating fitting a lockable hard case option like your second photo. All of the parts in question: the luggage rack, the locking plate, the soft case and the hard case are interchangable with the K1200GT.

By the way, the quote for a BMW hard top box, the lock kit and the badge was just over AUD600. Not cheap, and if you don't already have it, you also have to buy the locking plate and a lock kit for that.
Argue your limitations and they are.

I have successfully adopted the BMW 35 liter case and GS plate to the luggage rack of the Roadster. Picks around here somewhere...wait...

Oh, search for post "Camping Gear" page 6 of the thread, way past on the big board.

I have a friend that has an '04 k1200GT with the BMW topcase you mentioned. It was some mod that is common for the previous K1200RS/GT models and does incorporate the tail rack, but the K1200 tail rack is slightly different than the Roadster. I'll try to take some pictures of his bike this weekend.

topcase

As I've posted before, the Hepco-Becker rack and topcase are really slick and inexpensive. The forty litre Journey (available with silver accent if you have a silver bike) and rack (direct bolt-on, and a real rack...make that functional rack and cool looking) will set you back only about $225.00
PM me if you want some more data...I'd be happy to email you a digital pik in a couple of days of my system.

Thanks for the info you all have posted. I think with a bit more info, I will go with the hepco & becker top case. I am hoping it will swallow up a schuberth C2. The dang helmet wont fit in the standard system case and I would like to have a place to lock it up out of the rain and weather. I will have to save a few more bucks and take the plunge. I will be all set for long tourning distance then. Wife will also like to have something behind her too.

For the H&B, I believe the trunk part number is 610.088 00 09 (this one has the silver insert and is the 40lt trunk) the mount is 610.061 I think. There is also a 50lt trunk that may work too, 610.086 00 09 (this one also has a silver insert) I am still waiting on an email from eurotech to see if these are the correct items for the R. I dont think the web sites are real good showing which parts you need etc,

Anyone that has the H&B know if it will take a Schuberth C2 or would mind measuring the interior dimensions?

I have the Hepco Becker rack on my R1150 and have had it mounted for a year or so - I liked it's style (and substance) more than the silver plastic BMW model. I recently purchased a Hepco Becker 45 liter topcase and I think it's great, It locks (esily) onto the rack and secures with a key (two provided) the case locks shut with two locking latches. All three locks use the same single key.

This 45 liter model holds my XXL SHOEI with ease, pluse my mesh riding jacket and my tank bag, plus more...

There are two listed on e-bay now. Retail is 254. I got mine on ebay (from the same place now listing) for 150. Good luck. Bob
