buying from private seller in the US

Howdy, again.

Not sure if this is a good idea, not so much for me but the seller... I'm looing at buying something from a private seller in the US, but not sure if what he has to offer will fit. I thought, maybe not a good one I admit, that perhaps the seller could send it up, if iit fits, I throw the cheque, money order, to the courier to send back to him. If no fit, I Pay shipping both ways. Does that sound reasonable, or am I being waaaay to gulabal...gulable...whatever. I realize this places pretty much zero risk on me, but I guess the standard way, or how it is usually done this places all the risk on me. If it was $40 I don't think anyone would put much thought, but a few hundred... I dunno. Is this reasonable??

If I were the seller I wouldn't do it. As great as most people here on the boards are, your deal places all the risk on the seller, who doesn't know you or have any assurances of receiving payment.

True. As the buyer, after I send the money I have no guarntee that I will get my parts or services.

If you use paypal, you are given some recourse with fraud, wrong product, broken product, etc.

Perhaps you should look into using Paypal for your transaction.

It depends the source of the ad. Ihave for years bouhgt off the Moto Guzzi and BMW sites and never had any problems. But other sites I steer clear of. It seems the owners of these brands are really good honest folks. I even go as far as saying count to three and we each send off the respective goods.

Thanks for all the replies. The seller is wanting cash first, that's fine. Same 'ol same 'ol. It is a shame though, that because of the actions of a few the rest of us have to go through the inconvienece of not being able to cross ship.

I think using paypal is the way to go. Its free to sign up for an account.

However, you would like to try the part and if it doesn't fit or maybe you don;t like it then send it back. Again, not a good deal for the seller since if he sends it to you then he must turn down any other offers. By the time you send it back to him any interested buyers might have bought from someone else or no longer be interested. We have to keep in mind that we're not dealing with stores that have the ability to more easily move stock, insurance, etc.
