I researched a few locks and alarms and do-dads recently. I don't park in any high risk areas (generally), and at work I almost always use a cover (out of sight out of mind -- meaning to a thief it could be a piece of junk under there -- plus it adds one more step + time to uncover and steal, unless they've scoped it out beforehand and are waiting for you). I did want to have an extra lock with me, something that I would use and would remember to take off (not comfortable with most disc locks) and that would store on the bike and be convenient. That's the hard part, having something with you all the time. A big ole chain wasn't going to do it for me.
I was about resigned to getting a disc lock, when I found this at REI.

It's made by OnGuard, a Pitbull model (I've got the smaller standard size). It's a U-bolt type lock (I've used a regular u-bolt bike lock on the other bike for years), but smaller (shorter but still wide enough for front wheel - thru spoke and disc) and it comes with a clamp that holds it to the bike. It was hard to find a spot on the Bruce for the clamp, because the clamp is designed for a larger bicycle down tube. But with a little fiddling I got it to fit on the rear grab rail where it's fairly secure and very handy. I use the lock when I park at work. I don't have anywhere to park where I could actually chain the bike to something.

I also use an OnGuard lock, their disc lock. One tip to prevent theft is to use two different types of locks. Not only do two locks slow them down but from what I've read theifs usually come prepared for one type of lock, not two.
