Anyway thanks for the great photos. Catching that salmon on a flyrod must have been a thrill of a lifetime! One of these days, I'll have to make it up there.

I'm sure you took many more great shots so if you ever post them somewhere, let us know. I'd love to see more.

Regarding the foam in the Pelican case...yes, I left the bottom piece in the case (3/4" thickness) - mainly to protect the Lowepro case from the bolts that attaches the Pelican case to my luggage rack - but also for a bit extra insulation from vibration. Left the top piece of foam out since it's a tight squeeze when I push the lid down.

And here's another L lens to drool over. A 400mm 2.8 IS lens. Doesn't quite fit in my Pelican case however.



On a serious note : I'm employed by a large northern California newspaper so I'm fortunate enough to have all the camera toys I could want to play with. There is no way, I could afford them all.

There really isn't a forum for me to post about my Alaska Katmai Wilderness fishing trip on this board since I didn't take a motorcycle or even look for a rental or even see a bike in the wilderness.

I say post it Great Rides. State in the title that it isn't motorcycle related if you want to.

This goes for anyone else on the board that wants to share a non-motorcycle report. A good trip report is a good trip report, motorcycle or not.

That's my opinion anyway.

First off to all you really good photographers - keep up the good work! I am jealous of your talent and gear but love to see your work and ride reports!

2nd - Kristi - what a trip! I don't care where you post a report, just do it!

3rd - I too use a Lowe camera case and Pelican box setup and just for a little jocularity, I thought I would post it! (Try not to laugh too hard!)

First the camera - a simple Canon A70 digital with a 3X zoom.

Fits nicely in the Pelican 1050 case with room for extra batteries:



And it all goes in the tank bag with my other assorted junk, er, I mean my valued gear:

Seriously, the wife and I are planning an Alaskan cruise next year and I really have to upgrade my camera gear. Don't want to break out the old Nikkormat and go back to shooting Kodacrome 64!

I can guarantee superb results if you bust out the ol' Nikkormat, some classic Nikkor glass, and Kodachrome 64. Find someone with a film scanner (I just use my Canon 8400 set to max resolution), and have the slides scanned;....megapixel-schmegapixel....Maybe not the most convenient way to capture digital images, but superior in most every other aspect. I still keep an F3 in my stable for doing just that; scanned negatives and slides.

Here are the photos I promised earlier in this thread. This set up was built around the need to carry around a big digital SLR, Konica-Minolta 7D with the grip/battery pack.

Start with one Hepco & Becker 41 liter top box

Add the gel pad designed as a stadium seat (here with cover pulled back to show the gel matrix. This is to dampen vibrations to $$$$ equipment).

This allows you to toss in most any reasonable sized camera bag. This is a Tamrac. I think even a small Pelican would fit. I had room for all my rain gear which just added padding to the whole affair.

When you hop off the bike, the camera gear is easy to get to, yet locks up when you go in for lunch or head out for that hike.

Just for kicks, add a RAM mount on top of the H&B top box

Put a RAM mount ball, with the 1/4-20 threaded bolt into your camera's tripod mount.


Then you can use the RAM mount for your camera, for self timer or time lapse shots, or as a tripod (when stopped, of course).


I used this setup very effectively for shots like this on last weeks trip to the Canadian Rockies via the Beartooth Highway (WY) and Glacier Park (MT). It worked great !!:

Of course! I am from the south you know! For all those emergency repairs! Duct tape will fix anything! The pill bottle next to it has electrical tape wrapped around it and is full of cable ties, extra bolts of various sizes, some wire and other assorted items that could help you limp home! Never needed it, but you never know!
