Low idle

Post by Skiman »

Well, I've been trying to do an at home tune up. I did the valve adjustments, took my time and believe I got it right. I replaced all the plugs (checked the gaps). I want to check the sync on the TB's next. Before I do, I need to address the low idle. My bike (Rockster) is very rought to start and when I can eventually get it to stay running, it idles around 600 RPM. I checked and rechecked the plug wires and everything seems right there. Any ideas what may be going on? I'm a newbie at this but enjoy working on my own equipment so I definitely want to learn. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,

The low idle should be around 1100 but that's when the bike is at operating temp. If it were cold, I could see it idling down around 800 in the low idle position. Ride it until it's at OT and then turn the BBS's on each throttle body (big brass screws) counter clock-wise to speed up the idle if it needs it. NOTE: adjust them the same on both sides!! It does affect your low end sync when you do this.... 1/4 turn is a good incrament to start with although 1/2 turn wouldn't hurt too try if it were way out. On my '04 it seemed to take quite a bit of adjustment to get it where I wanted it. Mine was idling around 1600rpm at OT. You might try a search here too. I know this has been discussed before and I think I've even seen pics on the matter ;)

What year and how many miles are on the bike? Some Seafoam or Techron may help too depending on how much crud has built up in the cylinders...

Low Idle

I have tried this well documented advise on balancing. It tells you to use the BBS todo the idle balance and then turn up the rev's to 4k and then use the throttle cables to do a fast idle. I tried this on my 1150r and all seems good.
the site address is

good luck

Thank you folks. I will be doing the BBS adjustment tonight. Then following the TB procedure.
