Keeping that battery charged over winter

Post by pvdl »

I have a 2003 1150R which is not my primary vehicle.

How do I keep the battery charged over winter? I have a trickle charger. The user manual doesn't say anything about where the battery is located.

My R65LS has a built in connector for a trickle charger (probably an aftermarket addition). Does the R1150R come with that, or can I buy one somewhere?

Thanks,

Peter

the best charger to use is the optimate 111

Battery Tender will serve your purpose and you can hook up the Tenders pigtail to your battery if you rather.

Speaking of Batteries, my stock battery has croaked after 3 yrs and 20K miles. (should have used the Tender  )

I've been shopping and the best price for a Odyssey PC680 was found at http://tinyurl.com/yy855x

Never heard of Power Source batteries but their CCA were high and the price was $67.95.

Everyone seems to brag about the Odyssey so I took their advice.

I suggest getting a cheap 24hr on/off timer like this

and only trickle charging about one or two hours a day, even with the trickle charger. Don't let it cook all the time.

The power socket should be on the cover over the starter motor, if yours has one.
The battery Doc, or tender is the way to go. Just plug and forget until summer. :D They turn themselves on and off as required.
I use one all the time, just plug it in after every ride.

The battery Tender is great.

The auxillery plug should be by your left foot peg.

+1!!!!!

You may not have the accessory socket as it was 'optional', but if you don't, it's cheap. and easily installed.

I just replaced the battery with an Odessy, but I don't know which type the Odessy battery is, which charger is best for this unit?
I can't get out of my driveway it's covered in ice, or else I'd just ride it!

most likely you got PC680, hit Oydssey's web site and ask them or read their recommendations.
provided the battery is still fully charged (12.84V) a trickle charger like the Tender will be fine.

Riding isn't an option for those in the snow belt. Perhaps in another two or three months.

I keep a Battery Tender plugged into both of my bikes 24x7. I use a BMW spec tender for my R1100's gel type battery and a regular type tender for my Harley's lead/acid battery.

Got my new Oydssey PC680 today and according to the info with it...if you have 12.84 Volts on your battery you can disconnect the ground lead through the winter and be fine, if not re-charge fully then disconnect.

Otherwise keep a 3 amp trickle charger on it since the 1150 has a clock that continues to draw amps....or I guess you could disconnect the clock...which is as about as easy as disconnecting the battery :smt017 .
