Newbie advice?

I currently ride a F650cs and found a n '03 r1200r at a dealer for $11000.
Its a good looking bike with 5000miles on it.
I've only seen it from the dealers online ad !
Seeing I'm probably going to finance this purchase should I just bite the bullet and get a new r1200r.
The payments are going to be about $100/month more!
A new R1200r starts from $16000 cdn!
Please allow a 20% excahange rate to he USD.

Hi John...welcome.
'03 r1200r at a dealer for $11000.
That will be an R1150R.....and that's the one I'd go for...but that's just me.. :D..does it have ABS?..good if it does but I'm not a fan of ABS personally.

You should be able to get the price down a bit on that...others here will know what's a fair price..you may also be able to get the dealer to do some system cases at their cost price if you buy the bike..they are good to have and are very expensive to buy after.

The R1150R is a classic..IMO..but I'm sure the new R1200R is also very good...but that's a lot extra money...maybe you should test ride them both and see which one you fall in love with.

Go for the R1200R. Better brakes , transmission, motor and handling. You will get over the higher price and enjoy the newest technology for years to come.

John, seems expensive for a 2003 model.
Better deals in buy and sell on this site.

John: Like DJ said, ride both of them. That should help you make a decision. If the 1150 has conventional brakes, that would be a disqualifier for me. I'd not own a bike without ABS. Needless to say, those of us on the 1200 board definately favor the new model vs. the 1150. Let us know what you decide.

Test ride the 1200 and if it works for you that's the one. The $16k list Canadian won't get you ABS which may or may not be important to you. You may be able to save $1,000-$2.000 Cdn if you are willing to do a little work and are close to the border. There appear to be better deals stateside while the dealers in Canada seem to be holding list price. For example there is a new one on ebay now for $12,900 US including heated grips, ABS, shield, luggage mounts. Converting that to Canadian you are well under $16,000 with the options. It really isn't difficult importing the bike - IIRC there are guides on Transport Canada's website and the only extra fees are an RIV inspection fee and transportation for the bike. Had I lived closer to the border this is something that I would have certainly done.

Thanks for all the info!

I thought the bike was a r1150 but their ad shows it as a r1200.

I have bought vehicles south of the border before and realize its not a big deal!

Other than the warranty issues and yes I'm in canada so we are talking Can $.

There is no duty to pay and you will have to pay GST either way. $15K includes all the options whereas the $16K list price in Canada only includes the heated grips on the Cdn models - you will have to add the luggage rails, ABS and shield to the $16k price at your dealer. That'll bring the price up to between $17500 and $18000 Cdn + tax.

Good point John, forgot we are dealing mit da BMW. Canada Border Services Agency is responsible for assessing and collecting duties and taxes and can be reached at 1-800-461-9999 (in Canada) or 1-506-636-5064 or 1-204-983-3500 (outside Canada). A quick call should give you the answer - I suspect it's an additional 6.1%

I don't know how picky they are, but provincial MoT may want it brought to Cdn spec before you can register it. Used market usually has a little more leeway than new, but you never know which way the bureaucratic ball is going to bounce.

The registrar of imported vehicles has a blanket "all motorcycles from the US may be imported" clause.
As far as what mods are required other than daytime running lights and a kms speedo I don't know.
It does make the used market a lot more attractive for a r1150r however!
