2004 r1150r twin spark engine problems?

Post by Inaki »

Hello everyone:

I am thinking of buying a 2004 r1150r plain or rockster. I believe they both share the same engine. A friend of mine who owns a 2004 rt has had many problems with this engine and has recommended not to buy such year given the fact that it was the first year BMW made the twin spark engine.

I have read online a couple of reports on bikes suffering from power surges which is what happens to my friend's rt. I am not sure if the problems are inherent to only 2004s. Does anyone have any information about this problem? Does anyone know if BMW made any changes to the engine between 2004 and 2005 models? Any other comments?

Thank you in advance.

Be well, ride well!!!

That's great..and a wise choice... :smt023 ...Yes the Roadster and Rockstar both have the same engine.

That's very odd...The twin spark is a final improvement to a great BMW engine..the extra spark is mostly an emission thing and caused no other problems..IMO

I don't think BMW made any changes to the engine between 2004 and 2005 models.

Good luck

I seem to remember, but have no data point, that the Motronic 2.4a was changed between 2004 and 2005.
I don't mind paying for mistakes. Can I get a discount?

I think that your friend's RT needs tuned up.

My bike was as smooth as silk all day yesterday from idle to redline.

I have 30k,mi. on My 04' r1150r. No problems. I love this motor. This is by far the best utilitarian bike I've owned. I use My bike for everything from camping & hunting, to commuting. I have adapted many accessories to My bike so I can carry stuff. I can carry My rod holder, and or My rifle. Of course people look at You funny when You're carrying a rifle. But during deer season in northern Minnesota, nobodys' going to wonder what You're doing. I wouldn't hesitate a minute, buy it.

I have an 04 with no surge problems. I just had the 18k service done a few weeks ago and as I got closer to it, I thought I could feel some surge at lower speeds in 1st gear. Figured I would put some seafoam in it and see what happens. Came back from service and runs great! Made a believer out of me to learn to check the TB balance myself and do it more often.

Neither the 2004 RT I have, or my wife's 2004 R have had any problems with the engine. I have 48K on my RT, 18K on the 1150R. I think your friend needs to have his bike looked at since this is not a common problem for the 2004 year model. Surging in particular.
