Feel like a traitor to my R but WOW and Shazaam!

Post by Sit »

Well, some time ago, at an open house, I test rode a 12GS. That was a mistake. Have been looking half heartedly at them ever since. So after much contemplation, soul searching, and deep thought, I acted on impulse yesterday while my R was in for a service and bought a GS. I dont get to pick up the GS until Tuesday and now whenever I go in the garage, I can feel the R glaring at me. Its like it knows that it will go up for sale soon (one last trip to take on it next weekend). After that, it gets stripped of some of its add-ons and gets listed for adoption. I really love the R, after all it is my first bike, but I just can't afford the two of them.

Very clean right now, since it is still in the show room, but I'll see if I can fix that soon.

Congrats on the new bike.. :smt023 ...The new 1200GS is a great bike...Post some pics of it once you get it.

Did they offer to trade your RR for the GS or was their offer too low?

Their offer basically was what I owe on the R, not what it is worth and selling for in the area. So, after the ride, I am going to scrub the R up to look new again and remove some of parts that can be used on the GS. Then sell the R, and take the profit, hopefully a profit, and buy some bags for the GS that I have located from a friend and then pay some bills.

Nothing to be ashamed of! The GS is a great bike, especially the new lighter, more powerful version. If you are tall enough! If I was 2" taller, I might still be riding my '98 version! Congrats on the new ride!

And no reason not to hang out here either!

I have 2 friends that have the 1200 GS and they are nice....way to tall for me. Can't say I blame you. You can get good $ for the R though. Resale will be higher than what bluebook suggests. Good luck with the GS and the sale of the R.

I have to say, that thanks to this forum, I feel like I know a number of you and have actually met and become friends with several.

The "master" plan is for my wife to eventually sell her Guzzi and get a 650GS. Neither of us are really into the high speed, pushing ourselves and the bikes for the adrenaline. I'm a cop, I get enough of that at work. We both like cruising back roads at the posted limit or a bit slower and enjoying the ride and views. Where we live, once we get up into the hills about 5 minutes from the house, almost any road at any time can turn to gravel or dirt, so we figure with the GS models we can explore the backroads all we want and for longer trips they are still both very capable road bikes. Heck, not to set someone on fire, but the GS's I have ridden almost are easier through the turns than the R. Dont hate me! With the added power and reduced weight, the GS just dives into them. The thing that feels weird is the added height.

Hey, the R is a bike. No more, no less.

I hope your GS fits your needs better than the R. I am totally blown away at the R riders doing lots of gravel and dirt time on their Z rated tires and short travel suspensions. I love my R, but it stays on pavement.

Just remember to stop by and chat. Don't forget we want your stories and pictures, whatever you are riding!
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

Bad boy! Bad boy! ... selling me away, master??????!!!!!

kekeke ... if my bike could talk, he'll tell me to stop disgracing him and start leaning over more!!!!!!

The GS1200 is wonderful, and any BMW owner who denies taking a good look at one is lying.

Or blind.

Have fun with your new ride, and remember the ones you had on the old.

Cheers

Picked up the GS today. Holy power Batman! Of course it was raining (first wet day after several in the 90's and 80's and with new tires...)when I picked it up so I took it easy on the way home and avoided any fun roads, but even with that, what a blast to ride. Got the seat in a position I like, now just still messing with the windscreen to get it in a good spot. During the ride home and around, I found that I had an uncontrollable urge to head for any puddles and gun it through them! Still love the R, never forget your first, but even with the added height, the GS feels so light and damn powerful.

Just some snap shots of the gang while they are all still here-

I tried to ride a GS demo at the MOA rally in Wisconsin last week. I figured I would be safe there and not able to buy one if I really liked it. However, the lines for demo rides were too long for the hassle. I'm going to see if the local dealer will let me demo one next week. ( they haven't been generous with their demo rides lately ). I saw ( was passed by ) a number of GS's on the ride from the rally back to Utah. Maybe I should try one......

I just wanted to comment on how smart BMW is to let people test ride their bikes. I wonder how many bikes they sell by letting people go for test rides?

I had a similar situation. I was on a Pashnit Motorcycle Tour of Central California this past April. Cycle Specialties of Modesto, a BMW dealer was providing a 2006 K1200S for the owner of Pashnit Motorycle Tours, Tim Mayhew to bring on the tour. I've known Tim for a few years and have been on many Pashtnit Motorcycle tours.

He repeatedly asked me to ride the K12S for the two days, but I said, "no thank you" several times times. I did not want to ride it because I knew, I might like and possibly love it. I finally gave in on day 2 of the tour and rode the K12S on the back roads of Santa Barbara County, CA. I figured when will I ever get to ride a K12S at a pace in such a beautiful part of California. So I jumped at the opportunity.

Two weeks later, I had a K12S in the garage. I still have my Rockster and so far I have split my time between the two bikes. The two bikes ride really different and can't really be compared. I am still enjoying both.

Which is why I am struggling mightily to be smarter and stay off the new GS and most especially, the new R! :?

While the new GS address some of my issues with the old version (narrower straddle width to put your feet closer to the ground and lighter weight), I have a feeling the new R would prove to be a 'fatal attraction' if I rode it.

My 02 is paid for and runs well! That is sufficient to fight off the new bike urge for now!

I put off riding the Roadster when they came out until I was ready to buy one used. Good thing too! I came back from the test ride and told my wife and kids "I have got to get me one of these!"*

DJ, you kill me and you are correct, that is a Breva 750. I tried to line up the shot so you could see all of the tank emblems, but the sun and clouds made all of the shots kinda hazy.

Once the R is adopted out, the Breva may be the next to go. We are looking for a 650GS to replace it with or something similiar. Wife looked at the KTM's and rather quickly said no. She likes the looks of the Ducati Multistada, but I really question how multi it is. She is interested in the Aprilia Caponord, but the local dealer doesnt have any and says they are no longer imported, but it is rather easy to find 07 models on line back east, so I dont know what the deal is there. The Japanese bikes I think look too dirt-bike for her. The new Tiger would be nice, but I dont know if she likes the looks. I know she doesnt like the older style. The big problem is that I want the bike to have ABS. In reality, they wont go off road that much but if the technology is out there, why not take advantage of it. I know ABS wont save your bacon, your head does that, but it helps. Who knows, she has already been out sitting on the 12GS with a twinkle in her eye. It is a bit tall for her, but she has ridden one with the low seat in the low position and was able to almost flat foot it.

I rode the GS some more last night and still just giggle at it. The only thing so far that has thrown me for a loop is the front end that seems about a mile long. The only street bike I have ever ridden for any time is my R, so I am used to seeing my front tire turn out of the corner of my eye as I make turns. Of course with the GS, you cant see the tire and that is catching me sometimes as I will look into a turn, from a stop sign etc, and as I start, I think I am catching that the bike looks like it is still pointed forward and not turning. I am sure I will get use to it, but a few times now it has caused me to wobble through a turn and look silly.

I am, of course, completely unbiased  ...

... but the Roadster is by far the best looking bike among the three.
