Post by ken k »

Hello fellow beaksters,

I am looking at getting an old airhead. I have always like the clean look and style of these classics.

anything I should know about these beasts before I take the plunge?

'83 was in the era of soft metal in the valve seats. Could wear quicker. Otherwise, my '83 RS went for 16 years with no other major issues.

I was also wondering if the spline issue pertains to these older RT's as well? I am interested in this one particular 1995 model. Some of the other ones I've seen say that they've lubed the splines. Fill me in. Thanks.

Spline issues have been around the BMW's for a while, most of what you hear in the current forums pertains to the R259 model, or what is referred in the vernacular as the "oilheads". These are the 4 valve models that came out in 1994 with a 1100 cc displacement and a 5 speed tranny. They are nice bikes.....one of the major improvements was the advent of the 6 speed transmission as it was somewhat improve in "clunkiness" over the 5 speed.

I personally was in love with the RS variant.....although never summoned enough gumption to take the plunge...... :-k :-k
