Repositioning muffler to accept saddle bags??

Post by vballcoachk »

I recently bought a 2004 R1150R. The gentleman included hard BMW saddlebags but said that I needed to lower the muffler in order for the left bag to fit. I have tried multiple web searches for how to do this or if there is an extender arm that can be purchased and I have found nothing. Any ideas???

Thanks,

The dealer sells a kit to lower the muffler, but it's not cheap for what it is. You can remove the muffler and install a smal chrome exhaust tip and get a few benefits: Lose the muffler weight; make the bike more like a motorcycle; fit the full sized left case; low cost.

Even if you leave the muffler off, you will either need to get a mount to relocate the nub on the passenger footrest for the saddlebag or add brackets to the saddlebag to fit the existing nub.

Lower the muffler via BMW kit, or just remove the muffler and install a small exhaust tip in its place, as many others have done here. My wife's Roadster uses this approach with good effect; we bought a full-size LHS system case to take advantage of the situation.

Note - You most likely have the full-size left side case, or else the muffler position wouldn't matter.

For my Rockster, an aftermarket exhaust system mandated the use of the R1150R/GS left side case, with its special shape to allow for OE exhaust fitment.
