Need Step-By-Step Instructions For Throttle Cable Adjustment

Post by motorcityrider »

Does anyone know if there is a step by step procedure for the the throttle cable adjustment? Also, when should it be performed? Thanks.

Do you mean throttle body synchronization?

If you mean digging into the Bowden Box, I have no resource to recommend.

I know about the TB Sync, but I thought you also need to adjust the throttle cable that connects both TB's?

I think it's just confusion of terms. TB sychronization in accomplished by adjusting the throttle cables. (and the big brass screws at idle)
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

There is a procedure to first, loosen the cables at the high idle lever and the throttle grip; then loosen at the throttle body/pulley end; then sequentially tighten/adjust to balance the entire cable (the Bowden Box is meant to provide this balance among the four lengths of cable). It is involved and fraught with peril that something will be misaligned, forcing you to first fix it before successfully adjusting the idle and TBS using the right side cable only.

Most people are successful skipping that entire procedure and merely adjusting at the right side throttle body end - a standard TBS. I think Boxer (who can chime in anytime), Carlos, CycleRob, or Boxermania can advise the wisdom of doing the involved route. You might check IBMWR.Org for older information about Airhead throttle cable adjustments. Many early Oilhead adopters continued the practices that were common on the Airheads and enjoyed success.

You have the standard cable adjustments up at the handlebars on the Throttle (right) side and the High Idle (left)side. Those cables can get loose from that juncture down to the junction box itself and need to be adjusted as needed from that handlebar location. With the TB butterfly valves closed, the slack in the cable on top of the TB (which you can check by just gently pushing it sideways)should flex a tiny bit. If it doesn't, the valve may be always held open and that is a no-no. Make sure you have that slight slack in that cable on each side...but not too much! If you have too much slack the world as we know it would not exist and the cosmos...Oh never mind.

Anyway, once you have that tiny bit of slack on both sides, then you proceed to adjust the right side using a synch tool so they are EXACTLY the same. Actually, if you have a good ear, you can adjust the synch really close just by listening to the TB valves click shut. But to be exact, as our Teutonic bethren designed them to be, you need the tool.

See, Boxer knows this technical stuff.... slight slack/but not too much... how's that for jargon?

PS

My TB valves do not click but my pulleys clack. Is that the same thing?
