Changing tires today. Going to Road Pilot 3's

Post by M249Joe »

I have 7k on the orig. Conti. Going to the road pilot 3's. Will cornering be the same or are the outsides of the Pilots a lot harder?

Keep us posted as to how you find them, I've got Contis on my bike now and intend to change them for PR3s when they're done. I had the older version of RPs on my Honda VFR800 V.Tec a couple of years back - brilliant tyres so I have great hope for the PR3

I have the Pilot Road 3 tires on my R1200R for about a month now and I like them VERY much. I did a ride thru the mountains of West Virginia in the rain and they held very nice. I never had the feeling that they were going to slide. With all of the sipes cut in the tread they have a little buzz to them but other than that they are great tires. I will buy another set when these are worn out.

I went to Michelin PR3s on both of my BMW's a month ago, must say they are the most confidence inspiring tyre I have riden on. I have recentl;y returned from a 1950km 4 day trip on my 2010 R1200RT and they (the PR3's) were sensational (replaced the standard Metzeler Z6). I have clocked up about a 800 kms on the R1200R and also improved the all round handling of the bike (replaced the standard Mezler Z8). You should be very happy with your new tyres (especially if you get caught out in the rain).

Cheers

Is the buzz enough to be an annoyance or a contributing factor to rider exhaustion on long days? Everything I'm hearing about these tires sounds amazing - I'm planning on getting some when my OEM shoes wear out.

Is there a specific reason you're changing tires after only 7K on the OEM tires? Thanks.

Mine only got noisy (I'm on my 3rd pair of Pilot-Roads, had 2 sets of the 2, now on the 3..) after about 10k miles on them. And they are amazing. I had a few sets of the Conti's on the bike, and the PR-3 is hands down the best wet weather tire I've ridden on. It's not a slouch in cold weather either. And it's wonderful in dry. Plus it lasts 2x as long as any other tired I've tried on the R12R.

Nobody answered the question. Can you lean hard on the PR3's. I'm on my second set of conti's and I can scrape my pegs. Can that be done with the PR3's? Thanks in advance.

I had the Conti's on my bike when I got it and switched to PR3s just before a trip to NC/TN/GA and they were awesome on the Dragon. Tires wore in all the way to the edges of the tire on the Dragon and felt amazingly confidence inspiring. Much more so than the Contis. As far as dragging pegs is concerned I have Wilbers shocks on my bike and they are set pretty stiffly (and I weigh only 165lbs) so I doubt I could drag a peg without riding like a complete crazy man. Bottom line is I felt like I could lean the bike all the way to the edge of the tires in complete confidence. That was not the case with the Contis.

Yes lean angles on the PR3's are amazing in both the dry and the wet (peg scraping will be do-able). I would dought that the Conti would be in the same league as the Michelin, in truth, I believe Michelin has sent all other tyre manufacturers back to their drawing boards (the Michelins are truly a quantum leap forward in tyre technology). I am a firm believer that good tyres is the best insurance you can have for your machine.

Pilot 3 buyers / users:

You are buying the normal Pilots and not the "suffix B" Pilot 3s that are listed for "two up touring", right?

I would expect the "suffix Bs" to be for bikes a bit heavier than the R1200R.

The Conti's are stickier than the pilots so if you are really hammering corners (scraping foot pegs) they will not feel as tight. You will get double the mileage though. I managed 13K on my rear before changing and had 15k on the front with some to go yet when traded up from an '09 to an '11.

Yep, I'm running normal 3's and not B. Got about 7000km's on them and they seem to have lost minimal thread so far, very pleased with them.

I have 1k on the new tires. Cold here in Ohio so I can't ride em hard till spring. I am using heated pants and jacket though! Rode in 35 degree weather for the first time. Fun!...

Bike feels different in a very good way with the new tires. No wear spots yet. The Conti's had flat spots at 1k miles...

I know this is an old thread, but I'm resurrecting it anyways...

I agree - I've got about 250 miles on a new set of PR3's. Switched from the stock Z6s and hands down the PR3s are much better even leaned way over. Took it easy the first couple of rides, but not today - the PR3s felt much more planted, stable, and "hooked up" than the Z6s ever did, especially when cornering hard. Michelin truly hit it out of the park with the PR3. =D> =D> =D>

Edited for punctuation.

If the answer to your question is no, then those that have found out are probably incapable of responding.
