Oil consumption down, fuel economy up!

Post by carl1957 »

Bought my '03 R1150R a year ago, this past June. It had 11,000 miles on the clock. I was happy to get a low milage one. Was disappointed to find high oil consumption, (nearly a quart per 1,000 K) and about 35 miles per gallon. After another 7,000 miles, I am happy to report that oil consumption is down to a few ozs per 1,000, and It's getting 45 miles per gallon. Been keeping the rpms between 4 and 5,000. Am guessing she's not yet fully run in, expecting a little more improvement.

good news on the MPG. I had my struggles with that for sure.

My 02' bike never really had a using oil problem... bought it 3yrs ago at 13,500.

good luck!

My post from another thread:

Also, FWIW, my bike has always used quite a bit of oil, a quart every 1500 - 1600 miles or so. At about 40,000 miles, on the advice of a respected poster on another list, I found a road with a steep uphill grade of several miles, and flogged the hell out of it -- WFO and repeatedly to the rev limiter in lower gears the whole way. I felt like I was going to blow it up, but of course that didn't happen. The oil usage seems to be substantially decreased.

lcarlson, Did you see an improvement in fuel economy as well as a reduction in fuel economy? Seems to me, less blow by, would improve your milage.

Don't know -- I've never calculated fuel mileage.
