AF-XIED - This thing is amazing!

Post by maccraith »

I thought I had done all I could to smooth out my bike (03 R1150R) - BoosterPlug, Autolite plugs, VERY careful tuning and syncing. It was running really well - very smooth unless puttering about in 3rd or 4th gear in the city at 2500 to 3000 rpm. Even then most of the hiccups were gone. Just an almost unnoticeable amount of occasional hesitation.

Then my friend let me ride his bike after he installed the AF-XIED. No hesitation. None!

So I bought one and installed it. My God, it's a brand new bike! Not only is it buttery smooth in roll-on power delivery, but it pulls like a train - even below 3000 rpm. I don't know that it is any faster, but it is definitely smoother throughout the rev range. What a pleasure to ride! This is the first modification I have made that has made me sit up and take notice.

If you have been thinking about it, I would definitely say, "Do it!"

On an 1150 you remove the fuel tank so you can reach the O2 sensor connector and plug the AF-XIED in line with the O2 sensor and the 1150 wiring harness. Then connect its ground wire to the battery negative terminal.

What it does is to shift the switching point of the O2 sensor from 14.7:1 to somewhere between about 13.5:1 and 14.5:1 based on its setting. Once set to a richer setting the Motronic adds fuel throughout the fuel map.

The O2 sensor is the equivalent of the thermostat in a heating system. Turn it down and the mixture gets richer.

The result obtained by the OP is typical for a well-tuned bike.

oh - ok, so it spoofs the O2 level (presumably dynamically) so that the Motronic goes for a richer mixture across the entire map, giving you a little more performance at the cost of mileage. Interesting, may look into one.

I installed a Booster Plug and it
made a significant difference for about 3,000 miles. Now it seems to be fading. Did you find the same thing?

Yes. And I was surprised at how the hesitation eased back in. I didn't really notice it until I rode by buddie's bike with the AF-XIED on it. Then I noticed the difference. Big difference!

Where do I get the CCP and how much is it? I assume it's like the one I had purchased for my R1200C, but haven't located the R1150R part number yet. Mine's a 2002 US version.

Cheers!

I'm guessing the yellow CatCodePlug is required for the AF-XIED to work correctly? If so, you do NOT need to purchase a CCP, which is only a metal jumper bar cleverly hidden inside an important looking yellow plastic cube. All you have to do is make a short wire jumper with male spade terminals on each end and plug that wire into terminals 30 and 87, which are discretely embossed on the plug's open terminal end. The 2nd pic gives a lot of info, thanks to DirtRider for the main version of the photo.

Yes, air temperature trick boxes provide temporary imprvement. Permanent fueling change requires something like AF-XIED. I had BoosterPlug, then IICE temperature thing, now AF-XIED... and it works.

Note: does not require cat code plug. Unless Roger has measured spark timng variation among the R1150** cat code map options, I'm assumng default map's as good as any for foundation upon which the AF-XIED richens mixture.

Look at the last post on this page: http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/u ... 243&page=3. The correct coding plug should be used.

And for an R1150** bike factory-configured without CCP?

+1 - none of my 3 Rocksters have ever had one fitted. It may be that the AX-FIED isn't necessary for bikes running the original map?

As in the link I posted, "No Coding Plug" is a valid configuration for a R1150R, what it means depends on the year of production. Below is an example but to know for sure you have to read the Motronic with a GS-911.

2002 R1150R CA Single Spark
No Coding Plug: R1150R/GS ECE Kat
Yellow Coding Plug: R1150R/GS US u.TEV
Beige Coding Plug: R1150RS/GS CH o.TEV
Pink Coding Plug: R1150RT ECE/US Kat/T
30-86 Coding Plug: R1150RT US II Kat/TE
30-86-87:
30-86-87a: KEINE SERIE
30-86-87-87a:

Even with the correct plug (which may mean No Plug), most well tuned bikes benefit a lot from a lambda shift like the AF-XIED.

Yes, my leading question was aimed towards the OE sans-CCP applications.

For my Rockster, the XIED has greatly improved "rideability" via the fueling shift. Highly recommended.

Any increase in fuel consumption when fitting a XIED?
My Rockster generally runs good, the only thing I would like to get rid of is the snatchiness from a closed throttle.

If your bike is well tuned before you install the AF-XIED, here are the factors and how they affect fuel mileage:

--For speeds above 65 mph (approx.), if you add 6% to fueling, you get about a 3% reduction in fuel mileage so maybe 1 mpg less.

--For speeds under 65 mph, you will very often be in 1 higher gear than before the AF-XIED due to the improved running. As a result you will get about the same gas mileage.

--If you're twisting the throttle more, because your ride is more fun and you like accelerating out of the corners, etc. You might use more fuel. ;)

--Most riders who I've heard from feel the blended mileage is about the same.

I have been running one for about 18 mths now and I haven't noticed any obvious change in my fuel economy.

If you want the absolute ducks guts combination...put on Lennie's Rocket Sprockets as well. They are cam chain sprockets that mechanically advance the timing, this brings the peak torque back by about 900 RPM.

I can trundle around town at 80kmh in top at 2500 rpm. Roll it on an it just pulls away. I took the bike for a long tour down through New South Wales to Victoria then across the Bass Straight on the Ferry to Tasmania. When I was there I had the opportunity to really let it spin, at 4500rpm it was like a completely different motorcycle, gone was the gentle giant....it was psychotically fun.

I yanked out the yellow code plug, doesn't seem to make much difference, smells a bit rich at warm up but other than that, without a dyno I can't detect any obvious changes. I don't have a cat anymore either just a two-into-one and a shorty muffler. The sound is magnificent. I have been riding Wobblies for thirty years now and the one thing that always irked me was that they sounded like a sewing machine having butt sex with a vacuum cleaner. No more! It has a fine throaty growl and the occasional sweet little pop on the over run.
