shredded air filter?
Hi All,
I just checked my air filter (Rockster E80) and found that a good portion of it is shredded / chewed up… wondering if anyone else has experienced this? It's been maybe 18 months since it was last changed (probably too long, though the filter itself doesn't look too dirty) and I found a few bees and other bugs in there, but can't figure out why the filter material would be shredded like that. It is kinda like something got trapped and tried to make a home out of it. Any guesses? Or this just happens sometimes?

Possibly mouse or rat. Had similar shredding on car firewall, engine side, and found missing insulation material within nest elsewhere in garage.InvisibleOrdinary wrote:Hi All,

Hmm, yeah... we do have mice and rats living around the garage, but how would they get in? The air filter isn't exactly in an exposed location (it's stock, so under the gas tank next to the battery).
But then again, we have been camping and chipmunks figured how to get into our car trunk when everything was locked up.

Re: shredded air filter?
they find a way. little buggers. sort of amazing what they'll go through to make a nest
My honda 4 wheeler wouldnt idle one day... 6" of nest and turds in the bottom of the airbox, and air filter element was destroyed. sucked all the debris into the screen(luckily it was there) and semi clogged the intake.... it has a3ft long snorkel that goes up to the front of the handlebars.
been lucky with the bike! But, I ALWAYS check that now.

Re: shredded air filter?
oh, duh. it might explain the sunflower seeds embedded in the filter when I took it out :-/
Interesting thread, Buckster. I may want to do something similar for parking in the garage…

Re: shredded air filter?
lol at the sunflower seeds.... the mice also used grass clippings from my lawn mower bag, which was left leaned up against the quad.
after that happened, I also had a Yamaha Raptor 700, that I kept in pristine condition. I always made sure to plug the intake in storage.
ummm... yikes, which....just realized i forgot to do that with the Honda. :/ its in the shed, under pool toys, waiting to plow snow.... and Ill have to clean it out again
EDIT:
that thread buckster linked is awesome. the snacks in the airbox.... brought back a memory! ... my fz1 wouldnt start one morning. couldnt figure it out. worried me badly! drove the battery down trying....
then it backfired, started. and a piece of kids SIDEWALK CHALK popped out of the pipe! which makes sense, after seeing the train tracks my 4 yr old son had drawn...and they stopped at my bike!

That is hilarious stuff. Chalk in the pipe… reminds me of the Beverly Hills Cop scene where he stuffs bananas in the tail pipe of the cops car (while sending out full waitered dinner.

Had this exact same issue on my old VFR800 V-TEC - rotten vermin!
